While renewing my medical I asked if it would be possible to get the old style medical certificate instead of the new web printout.

The AME asked why I would want that instead of the new one and I explained to him that the new type smears the ink all over that plastic window insert that I keep it in, making it difficult to read after a few weeks of being in my wallet.

He said that no one else has complained of such an issue and that it must be my wallet insert that is causing the problem.

So am I the only one having this issue with the new medical printouts?

Note: I'm using the AOPA Ramp Pass Wallet Insert.

Take it to Office Max or Staples and laminate it?

Maybe let it dry before you put it in the wallet. ;)

I have my medical folded into wallet size, and I protect it and my pilot certificate by folding them into a "flying paperwork taco" - Pilot certificate on the inside, medical folded up surrounding it, and a piece of an old sectional surrounding my home airport that I cut out folded around both to protect them from my wallet. Works great, no smearing, and no fancy-schmancy "pilot gear" required. ;)

scotch or packing tape is a quick cheap laminate to keep the ink from smearing.

or duct tape if you want to keep it secret. :)

I like the duct tape idea but since I'm in the aviation business I think I'll use Speed Tape instead.

What kind of flying are you doing that makes you sweat so much?!

:D:D:D
Low level under the radar stuff the keeps me close to Sea Level, so it might be the ocean spray that's getting to it.

Suggest your AME get a better printer, better ink for it, or verify they are using the right printer/paper combination. Perhaps show him or her your last medical to him so he or she could see the problem.

i havent had this problem. I like the Flying paperwork taco idea!! i dont think i have the right kinda wallet for that.

Dude! You get to print your own medical now days?

Scan it and print a fresh one each week.

Use a Laser printer

Photoshop the scan and put my name on one while you are at it. (Just kidding)

Are you the only one who thinks there's a problem with the new medical paperwork?

yes.

Tell your AME to stop using the inkjet and get with a laser printer, on 28 pound heavy stock paper. No troubles.

Just go to Dr Bruce. His printer works right.

I don't have any special kind of wallet - Just a regular ol' men's bifold like you can pick up at any ol' department store. My "paperwork taco" is in one of the credit card slots.

My very first printer-printed medical I did was on a bubbleJet. I looked at it and didn't like it; it alread had a very small smear. Since I have learned to never leave a federal website until you have what you need in hand, I immediately reprinted on the LASER. I've never looked back.

The BJ printer was there for thallium heart images from 300 dpi files. But even that has gone by the wayside....so the BJ is in the basement.....

Is that a sectional in your pocket, or are you just happy to see us? ;)

Cut out and laminate a smallish rectangle of a manilla folder. I fold it in half and it fits perfectly in the cardholders of my wallet. A sort of wallet inside of a wallet for important papers.
