Airplane Repo The TV Series

Hey, the PA-28 is a status symbol! Nobody said it was a symbol of HIGH status. ;)

I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but around here, if you find yourself walking around the airport fence, scouting for a place to penetrate the boundaries, feel free to use the open gate by the parking lot.

It is that way at a very large percentage of GA airports and if there is no open gate, just walk through the GA terminal.

If any of the break-ins they do on the show were actual events, the film would be great evidence and they would all be locked up by now.

I landed at KSCK after Atlantic Aviation closed (9PM -- I landed at around 9:15PM) and couldn't get out. I spent an hour wandering around until security finally picked me up. You actually needed a code to get OUT of the airport, not just to get in. It was ridiculous. Barbed wire fence all around. Tower/Ground were closed too.

Yeah, locking people into airports is nuts. It ought to be illegal.

Same thing happened to me at KSMO except that security was a lot less friendly about it.

Maybe it's one of those "highly secured airports" they keep talking about!

So what did they do, tell you you shouldn't land there?

Yep. I told him to f*** off and that it was a public airport. Santa Monica has been trying to close their airport for years so the city personnel are very unfriendly. I ended up jumping over the fence. Lol

I watched half an episode and that was enough fun for me. I can't stomach reality shows, about the only one I can think of that I watch is Pawn Stars. Takes me about 10 mins to watch an episode because I fast forward through the nonsense. If I did that with this show each would take me about 30 seconds.

The only thing it does for GA is confuse people into thinking that Airports are highly secured areas where the line guys will chase you around.

Funny thing is....it's not a reality show.

It's fictional drama...made into a reality show for anyone who is not a pilot.

Take it for what it is....relax and enjoy the show.

Pilots get hooked because we are suckers for anything aviation on TV.....we quickly laugh and it's actually becomes a sitcom for most pilots. Not as good a Sienfeld....but we laugh...we judge....and we are slightly entertained at the end of it all....if you realize what it is....not a reality show.

Isn't that what all "reality" shows are?
Yes. I can't think of a single reality show that is not fictional. Especially on Discovery.
The previous poster may be confusing reality shows with documentaries. A documentary this is not.

Isn't that what all "reality" shows are?

Nope not by definition.

Lots now are claimed to be reality shows....but that's the new thing....and are spun just like Airplane repo.

Lots who have posted seem to have this confused.

The first show I recall using the term reality show was big brother or survivor and neither had anything to do with reality.

Is the big brutish big dumb guy who always says "bruh" and has a bunch of tattoos still on the show?

He was as of the last aired episode. I don't know if he will be on the new season or not. If they do away with him and his boss both, it would improve the show. Niether of those guys are pilots or know anything at all about airplanes. At least Kevin Lacey is a for real pilot and knowledgeable, although you can't tell it from the show.

He told me that he sees nothing of the show except a little footage on the camera's monitor here and there before the show is aired. He sees it for the first time when it is aired. If the truth were known, I expect that he thinks the show is hoaky like the rest of us do, but the difference is that he is benefitting monetarily.

Yeah, I have a few non pilot friends that don't seem to understand why I roll my eyes when they start talking about it. They expect that since I am a pilot that I shouldn't be making fun of the show.

I personally didn't catch the part about 153MPH, but I certainly saw the $100,000 flash on the screen. I just laughed and moved on.

It was on the screen just above the $100,000:yes:

Just because they call them reality doesn't make it so.

I wonder what happens when he tunes in one of the financial channels? :D

Bit of semantics there. It's a fictional drama made to look like a reality show? That would be a reality show... Game of Thrones is a fictional drama, made to look like a fictional drama. Modern Family is a fictional drama made to look like a documentary... but there's no confusion on either of those shows that they're not 'real'.

Whatever you call it I just didn't enjoy the 15-20 mins that I watched. I found it less about aviation and more about a guy sneaking around an airport to find this SR-22 and the valuable maintenance logs. Even relaxed it still wasn't a fun show to watch.

This season it's more "fake" than ever. So fake it's nauseous. I used to enjoy the show for it's entertainment value, but there's so little "reality" in it this year, it's no longer worth watching imo.

Watched half of an episode last night. First time/last time. It could be the worst "reality" show, period.

You mean when they took a twin without avionics, they really didn't have to use the Garmin Nuvi street navigator to navigate to another airport in the dark, and they could have used some other means of navigation like, oh I don't know, perhaps this new-fangled thing called "ForeFlight?"

You're right. It's horrible, it presumes the audience are utter morons, and makes pilots look like friggin' idiots.

Are you serious?! They used a street GPS?!!:rofl:

I would think that someone in that business would have a flight bag that had both a portable aviation GPS (Garmin 796) and an iPad w/ FF or something similar. Also a handheld radio would be really a good idea as well.

Yep. In the mountains no less if I recall.

"Recalculating route, Recalculating route, Recalculating route, Recalculating route..."

"Recalculating route, Recalculating route, Recalculating route, Recalculating route..."

:rofl::rofl:
No doubt! Too funny!

I'm glad that the stuff I fly with doesn't start recalculating every time I divert slightly form the magenta line. That would get old fast.

Looks like they've recently shot an episode near Gillespie where blogger Gary Wing is based. BTW, he publishes some really good blog and video content worth checking out at www.flythewing.com. Here's his report in a recent newsletter calling out how scripted this show is:

Portions of the 7/22 episode of Discovery Channel's Airplane Repo show were staged at Gillespie and Brown Fields. Spoiler alert: the whole thing is fake. They pretend to repo a Gulfstream, which in reality is a plane they rented to fly from Brown to Gillespie. In one scene, Ken Cage "charters a private jet to the Napa Valley". The scenery they show of Napa is actually Chula Vista and Otay Lakes (oops), and the jet he "chartered" ends up being the same airplane they later "repo" (note the brown pillow on the seat in both scenes).

His partner Danny is supposedly driving onto an airport in Napa, but it's clearly Brown Field in San Diego. They "repo" the airplane in Napa, but the scene was actually shot at Gillespie's terminal building. The show is fun to watch, much like big-time wrestling used to be, but it's all scripted and produced, down to the fake cops right out of Central Casting. Click here to view a snippet from the Gillespie episode....

This latest one where they repo'ed the Baron was sooooo pathetic.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any more fake, it did.

I had an opportunity to chat with and listen in on the conversations of two of the main stars of the show one evening at Oshkosh. From some of the comments made, I think one can be certain that everything is staged, which we suspected anyways.

Nice, friendly guys they were though.

On one of the new shows, Kevin was supposedly in Mexico and had a guy with him that hangars at my old airport and I know reasonably well. They billed this guy as a mechanical genius who can fix anything. Reggie is a nice guy, but not a mechanical genius.

I don't know if I posted this early in the thread, but I think my favorite silly thing done so far on the show was running out of gas in a J3 Cub.

It was shot at a private, grass strip airport that I have flown into. It is located South of Sherman, Texas in Grayson County. The subtitle said "Lamar County, Texas." I live in Lamar County and it is two counties away.

The really hokie part though, was that they stated that he was running out of gas while showing the Whiskey Compass on E. for East, saying that it was the fuel gauge. In the same shot above the Whiskey Compass was the wire gas guage sticking up about a foot, indicating lots of gas in the tank.

If they did a 180, would the W stand for "Whole lotta gas"? I hate that show for thinking that we are all just stupid ****ers.

Lacey came in and was eating at the EAA club at OSH, but I didn't bother the poor man for a photo-op.

I wanted to, but I didn't want to act like a rabid celeb-seeker and ruin his breakfast...
