I spent four days at Mid America Flight Museum for the reunion of helicopter pilots from the Lighthorse, D-Troop 3/5, C-Troop 3/17. We were busy making sure everyone got rides, but we did get in a few photo missions!

This was the first time I ever shot a helicopter, so I was pretty nervous. Shutter speeds to get rotor blur are a lot lower than prop blur. I was happy with the results.

Sick!

The photo angles seem particularly unique with those huge blades seemingly coming right at you. Pretty stunning.

They look amazing.

I'm guessing exposure times around 1/40 to 1/80. Really sharp results. What lens/FL did you use?

Ok. I give. How'd you get these looking 3d?
No idea!

Did you have a gyro? Either way, seriously impressive work!
Nope, I've never used one. I might have tried one had I known I'd be shooting a helicopter!

I normally shoot 1/80 or 1/60 when shooting planes. For this I went from 1/60 and stepped down to 1/25, taking photos at all setting throughout the shoot because I knew a lot would be blurry.

These were shot with my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS iii, and Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS ii

If you ever want some tips on helicopter photos contact Ned Dawson out of New Zealand. He's probably the premier helicopter photog out there and I'm sure he'd be happy to share some of his knowledge. Stand up guy.

He and several other guys recently started a website: Helicopter Images.
