I have a 1946 Luscombe 8 sitting i central florida around Fort Pierce. I am looking for the least expensive way to get ADSB-Out into the plane at the best, least expensive shop.
Any Suggestions?

Does the aircraft have an electrical system and a Mode C transponder installed?

very old Mode C. installed. it works, but not sure if it will be good enough for a ADSB-Out hook up.

So you want a unit that reads the broadcast signal from your ADS-B for code / altitude. Navworxs and UAvionix (not for standard type certificated yet) do that. Looks like the GDL 82 will do that once it gets approved also.

Quite a few owners I know have gone with the Appareo Stratus ESGi. It is a combination transponder/ADS-B out unit. You have to have an Apple product with ForeFlight in order to see the ADS-B in. I am anticipating going with the Appareo also. My transponder is also pretty old. I would hate to spend the money for a unit using my old transponder for input, then have the transponder crap out and have to spend more money for a new transponder. Just my $0.02 worth.

I looked at those quickly and look great and inexpensive, but worried how old my transponder is. If they had them in 1946 when the plane was built it is probably the same one!!

Best way, wait a few more years for new systems and the chasing the jones types to put used ones on the market

I have been watching those since they came out. I am a big iPad/apple/ForeFlight believer and have them all. It would probably complete the package.More than I want to spend but probably the safe bet in the end.

I am heavily leaning in that direction as well.

If your transponder wont work with the new stuff, buy a rebuilt KT-76 King transponder and use Garmins new GDL82 (not out yet) UAT out only box that sits behind the panel and is between the KT-76 and the antennas. You will need a new GPS antenna and can reuse your existing transponder antenna.

I would like to hear from some that have used the Appareo Stratus ESGi

I installed an ESG and a 2S a couple of months ago. Simple to use, clear display. I like the readout that shows me the Mode C reported ALT, a good cross check.

I bought a Stratus 2S to go with it, and have the install kit to hook them together, although I've not done so yet (just waiting for the right opportunity to mount the plugs in the panel now that I have figured out where to put it). That was part of the reason that I went with the Stratus over the Garmin because it provided battery powered independent AHRS backup to Foreflight if needed for roughly the same money.

So, similar to the ESGi, but with the 2s instead of the 2i, providing battery backup independence.
