If you had 1, 3.125" hole in the panel open, and wanted a CHT/EGT instrument, which would you buy, and why?

show links if ya gottem.

A year ago when I was analyzing I was partial to the JPI stuff because they were way ahead on the USB port game.

Getting data out of some of the competitor's stuff reminded me of the standard IT problem these days that you had to get a USB to serial converter to work properly on a modern laptop, which works 99% of the time and really ticks you off when it doesn't.

JPI EDM 700, 730, 800, or 830, depending how much I was willing to spend and what features I was willing to pay for. I've had JPI EDM's in three planes over the last 17 years and maybe 2500 hours, and I'm absolutely sold on them.

Have you used anything else to compare ?

I've had the JPI and the Electronics International Units. The JPI really set the standard for me.

Might make sure their is adequate space fore of the hole, the jpi-s can be longish.

We ran into that problem putting an EDM-700 into our 172. Ended up removing the ADF indicator that never worked anyway. The EDM-700 has worked great. Before installing it, I never realized how hot the cylinder heads were getting while climbing out during the summer. The only regret was not getting the fuel flow option.

JPI 700 with fuel flow option. (That's exactly what we put in the 182 a couple years ago.)

Why? They show nice big digits at the bottom so you know exactly what your temps are, rather than having to guess by looking at the bars.

If you can afford more, the 800, 730, 830, and 930, in order of increasing cost.

I use the JPI 760. It did everything I wanted (including GPS/Fuel interlink) at the best price.

My only experience with JPI has been constantly changing failed EGT probes, a problem I haven't has with EI.

Granted lots of people don't have any issues with JPI so ionno

I've had my JPI for many years without any probe failures....oh yes, just one EGT probe failure when an A&P/IA bent one and snapped it off by resting his huge stomach on it and then trying to straighten it again without me noticing.

Yep, seems to be a chevy/ford thing, get the one with the features you like best.

I've used most of them over the years. The ones that fit in the 3 1/4 hole are pretty much the same for quality and features. You basically have JPI and EI to choose from. There is some minor difference in fluff features like how you download the information to your computer, so look there and see which one has the feature sets you like best.

The Aztec has a Gemini and the 310 has a JPI. I've also flown with the EI unit.

JPI all the way. It is by far the best. I've used their traditional EDM 760, but the others of that generation are similar. It's not only the most user friendly, but the most reliable I've used.

http://www.jpinstruments.com/scanner.html

Though not available in 3 1/8" the JPI Classic Scanner is great if all you need is EGT/CHT without all the frills.
Chief has them for $999.00/4 cyl and $1099.00/6 cyl.

In auto it scrolls thru all CHT's 1-4 and them thru all the EGT's. In manual mode you can step thru the sensors and keep the one you want to moniter showing. Pressing and holding the "step" button gives you buss voltage. Numbers are 1/2" tall red and VERY bright. The display output is dampened so the numbers don't stutter or flicker.

No bells or whistles but a good soild display of CHT/EGT. Cheap too!

I may be missing it, but If the only issue is the size of an existing hole and not maybe room on the instrument panel, I wouldn't let it be a factor in my choice.

I'm sure there could be some sheet metal solution if you have the space otherwise.

I believe that a good SM person can asjust anything, to fit if the space is physically there.

:idea::D
If all that holds back the agust Mr. D from installing an 2.25" product is a 3.125" hole in the panel I believe he could, after proper contemplation, come up with something that might pass FAA muster.
I've heard stories...

Tom, I have always been satisfied with the GEM. I have installed a few of them. The first one I installed was in a Widgeon. That was a pair of them:D.

Probes. I go through one or two EGT probes a year. The CHT probes have been pretty good. Erratic readings then total failure. I'm on my second or third JPI TIT probes - and never had an issue with the EI TIT probe. EI is primary. There is about a 50 degree difference between the EI and the JPI probes.
