A rant about dishwasher shopping....

I used to love LG electronics. :(

I learned a valuable lesson with their HVAC units: Just because a company knows how to make smartphones does not necessarily mean that they know how to make heavy duty appliances.

The sad thing is they were making appliances before they were making smart phones.:(

Among other things, that means they can't have the heater element to dry your dishes.

YGTBFKM. They don't have a damn DRY mode now?

Just charge me for the flipping electricity and I'll pay it. Sheesh.

Has a great dishwasher for 33 years... Then the damn thing gained 100lbs..:mad:..

Traded her in for paper plates...:D:D:D...

On all my construction projects I use Miele... Damn nice and super quiet.. Customers love them...

Not as stout as when they were still part of Hobart, but Kitchen Aid is still a solid product. Our house came with a Bosch, seems decent. Hate the way it beeps all the time at the end of the cycle, stinks when you started it before going to bed.

We have a Kitchenaid KUDE70FXSS that we paid about $1k. Very quiet, washes dishes well. Interior is SS. Hidden buttons typically not a problem.

And without the additional rinse aid, and a really good liquid detergent, they don't clean worth a crap either because they use less water.

We do combo, put on of those compressed pellets in the cup (Finish brand? can't remember) that opens on the second wash and add liquid at the beginning of the cycle for the first wash.

The one-two punch seems to work well.

Some Bosch models come with the beep, some don't. Our first had the beep, hated it, so when we built the house, I specifically bought a model sans beep.

That damned beep is loud.

IIRC, you can turn that off.

+ 1 for Bosch. We replaced a GE and could not believe how much better it cleaned and how quite it was. I believe it also sanitizes in the drying cycle. We have a Kitchen Aid at our vac spot and the wife has been wishing for a Bocsh.

I just cant bring myself to replace a perfectly mediocre machine.

The Frigidaire Gallery model I mentioned earlier is about as quiet as most any other I've heard, I believe rated in the low-50db range. If you are having a normal conversation, you'd have to stop talking entirely in order to hear it while in operation. It doesn't have a stainless interior, but I didn't see anything that really made that a big selling point. It has a small display that gives you a countdown in minutes and clean/dry indicators. As a bachelor for 3 years of ownership, I was only doing a load of dishes once every two weeks or so, but with married life it seems to be working just fine running once a week. It has heated dry and the food grinder. I think it was around $700 on sale when I bought it.

The hidden buttons are really only accessible with the door open, aside from start/stop, but that's not an issue to me.

 Somebody who thinks like me. Our dishwasher died a few years ago so me, the wife, and the daughter go to Sears to do some dishwasher shopping. Holy crap! The wife immediately gravitated towards the $1000+ models. Really? To wash dishes? It's an appliance, it doesn't need to be a work of art! While pondering dishwashers she moved on over to the refrigerator section and started saying how dated our side by side fridge/freezer with ice/water in the door was now even though it had been declared great a few years earlier. Maybe we should get a whole new set of matching appliances.

 :nono:

I said let's think about it. :dunno: What's a man to do?

I'll tell you what I did. I washed all the dishes by hand for about a year. It was like meditation or something. Listening to the radio, washing the dishes... Then Black Friday rolls around and Sears has a dishwasher for less than $200. I showed up at the store at 5:00AM or so, loaded up the dishwasher and installed it.

Our $200 dishwasher has performed flawlessly for several years. The controls aren't hidden and it has a real dry cycle. I don't have to clean some filter by hand like the higher priced Bosch. By shear luck, it's a fairly quiet model.

I'm not spending more than $250 on a dishwasher because no one other than me in my house has the energy to put the dishes in it and turn it on.

When I was a kid I'd have killed for a powered dishwasher. Kids and wives today are so lazy.

Some Bosch models come with the beep, some don't. Our first had the beep, hated it, so when we built the house, I specifically bought a model sans beep.

That damned beep is loud.

Our first one had a beep, when we moved into the house we kept hearing a beep in the middle of the night, not every night, but enough to be annoying when you are trying to go to sleep. I would hear it and get up looking for it, it would beep once then again in a few minutes. I know it was coming from the kitchen area, but it never occurred to me that it was the danged dishwasher!!:mad2: I bet we looked for 2 months before we figured out what was causing the beep!!

We have a kitchen aid dishwasher, 10 years old, not used every day. Flawless. We also have bosche washer dryer, stacker, great, no problems in four years. Both are quiet.

We have a Bosch, sadly the circulation pump just crapped out, out of warrantee, it's going to be about $400 to fix.

On the plus side, as stated, quiet and cleans well.

That sounds like an "installed" price. I suspect that the actual parts cost is half that amount or less. In my experience, Bosch dishwashers are fairly easy to work on if you have some moderate mechanical skills. Paying someone to fix an appliance these days often costs nearly as much as a full replacement.

You can turn off the beeps in a Bosch. Don't know why the default is for them to beep every time they do something.

Agreed.....

I am a simple kinda guy... Like nuttin fancy and buy basic top loading washers and front loading dryers... Last pair cost me 510.00 for both.... The controller for the dryer went out and I called the Sears repair people.. They sent out a "technician" ... He gave me an estimate to fix one small circuit board..... 625.00 dollars.. I said thanks, I willl call ya when I decide what to do...

He left and I drove to town to the Sears store and got there about 1 minute after he did.... I walked in, bought a BRAND new dryer for 215.00... The clerk had that guy load it into my pick up truck......

The technician gave me a VERY dirty look as I drove off.. I laughed all the way home... The scary part is they really think they are worth 120.00 an hour, plus a 500% mark up on parts...:mad2::mad2:.....:D

I clicked on this thread because one of these days I need a dishwasher for the condo. I'm afraid to turn the one that's there on because I'm pretty sure it hasn't been used in at least 15 years. Wouldn't want to flood the people below me.

My main concern is that it fits in the hole and someone will come to install it and cart the other one away.

You're too kind. It's a condo. They have insurance. And they could have chosen the top floor knowing that water always flows downward. That's why I hiked three flights of stairs to my first condo and first purchased home for years.

Kinda worked against me when the lightning strike hit. The hole in the roof was over my place. But it's Colorado... No precip and it was patched up quick.

The person on the ground floor where the sprinkler system was the path the Lightning found to ground, wasn't too pleased though. I think there was about four inches of water in her place and her Corgi wasn't too happy about that, by the time we got the door busted open with the firefighters. Opening the sliding glass door got rid of most of it. Ha.

Ground floor always sucks in a condo. :)

I've been reading reviews... so far it's not helping. The typical pattern is about 1,000 5-star reviews that say THIS DISHWASHER IS AMAZING IT CHANGED MY LIFE WOW BEST THING EVER

then about 100 1 star reviews that say it's a big piece of junk that doesn't get anything clean, or dry(almost all of them say they don't dry) and that it breaks often.

I've never had or even seen a Bosh appliance at anyone's house that I can remember but I know they're a good name in the auto parts world... hmm.. will have to take a look.

It's ok, I have a loud stereo hooked up to the TV. :yesnod:

But really noise doesn't bother us a lot. My wife and I are both the sort of people who need to turn a fan on to sleep. Sometimes I can hear our dishwasher in the kitchen while I'm going to sleep, it doesn't bother me.... pretty much any consistent sound like a motor or humming I can sleep through. Stuff like people talking, stuff banging around, the dog chewing on something, etc that isn't a constant noise will keep me up all night even if barely audible though. Go figure.

Try the product tests in Consumer Reports... At the library if you don't have the $20. :)

I also consider them friends so I'm not going to take the chance. Funny, I feel closer (and not just physically) to some people in the condo than I do to my neighbors in the other house where I have lived for 25 years.

Our house, built in 2003, came with a beeping Bosch. On that particular model you couldn't disable the beep. It drove us crazy. The other problem was that the clips that hold the tines in kept breaking; eventually I had to replace the entire lower basket.

4 months ago the Bosch finally died and we replaced it with a $1,300 Miele. Great dishwasher! Cleans great, it's quiet, and holds tons of dishes because the flatware lies flat in a tiny tray on top. It doesn't beep, and it even automatically opens the door about 2" when it's finished so the dishes can air dry.

BTW, we compared the Miele and Bosch models side by side at the appliance store and there was simply no comparison in the quality of build. Miele is much beefier and is constructed much better.

Miele units are the only non commercial grade units that hold up with the ride of boats.

Yeah.. I bet that beats the siht out of dishwashers, dryers and clothes washers........

Do you guys run a garbage disposal ? or just pitch it over the side and chum the water ???

Depends on whether you're in international waters or not. Most US regulations don't allow for the discharge of waste into the water.

ha..... Define ( waste).... I agree , turds don't need to get into the water...

How about a 5 gallon bucket of fish guts..????

We have a garbage disposal, it goes to the holding tank on the boat, unless we are off shore, then it discharges overboard. :D

I imagine fish it either one once it hits the water! We are supposed to dump the guts and heads 3 miles off shore and away from the mouth of the pass. A lot of charter boats will haul yesterdays heads and guts out the next day and dump it, but not on a spot they are fishing to keep from attracting sharks!:hairraise:

So. My dishwasher died. I took it apart and the main board that runs the thing had multiple fried traces and some blown capacitors. Looked all over the internet and there hasn't been a board available for it in about 5 years and 5 years ago they wanted $350 which is insane.

Over the period of about a month I messed around with repairing the board..but ultimately failed mostly because there were so many cooked traces and my attempts at repairing it just caused more damage since I couldn't really figure out the circuit design with the layers. Definitely let the smoke out of a handful of components during this period.

Finally accepted the reality that repairing my existing one wasn't going to happen...Plus the "pressure" from the girlfriend to resolve the dishwasher situation was increasing exponentially with each day. I looked around the internet and yeah it's incredibly frustrating. There is no such thing as a "neutral" review site and really all the reviews work out about the same with whatever their brand loyalty is.

If you try to read user reviews it doesn't matter which dishwasher it is it's a total pile of junk that's going to make a swimming pool in your kitchen.

I came to the conclusion that paying significantly more for a dishwasher wasn't really worth it. You're basically paying for prettier parts..not a higher quality machine..until you get to the thousands of dollars.

I knew one thing for sure. I *did not* want to go to a physical store and listen to a bunch of crap from some "kid" that had no clue and would waste a hour of my time pushing some extended warranty.

I *almost* ordered one via Amazon Prime to avoid that but their selection was rather limited. Finally looked at the various retailers that would show me if one was locally in stock and could be purchased online and picked up immediately thereafter.

That is something Sears does well, order online, drive up to loading dock, and in less than 5 minutes (guaranteed) they'll load the product in your truck.

Couldn't figure out any brand that didn't appear to make junk, so ended up buying this one for $449 which seemed like a pretty good deal:

Took me about a hour to install it. It's running right now. So far there isn't a swimming pool in my kitchen.

The stainless look, looks good in your kitchen. When does she make you make the fridge match? Heh.

Fridge is all that's left at least...Stove failed about two years ago and went stainless with that...

Heh heh. I'm just causing you trouble. If she reads it. Which she probably won't.

Somehow we haven't managed to have the appliances match since our first condo which came with all of them, so Karen doesn't seem to mind. Always one appliance that is the wrong color.

Usually because the fridge came from the last place, or they all came with the place and like someone else here said, I can't be convinced to replace a perfectly mediocre working machine.

That was a great line. Covers oh so many scenarios in my life... Haha.

Most boats will have a disposal and use a slop bucket.

Cheap appliances often rack their chassis on boats.

Data point: Two more LG units crapped out last night. One is too loud, one stopped cooling. 30 and 32 months old, respectively.

I have one spare Frigidaire unit in stock. I either use the loud room (and tick off the guest) or cancel their reservation on a sold-out Easter weekend (and tick off the guest).

LG sucks hind teat. :(

(Worse, I just got a message from the former head of IT at Frigidaire, the company we are now using, telling me the sad tale of how that once - grand American manufacturer has been gutted, and now outsources production of their HVAC units to....LG. Argh.)

In Asia, the hotels pretty much all use Mitsubishi inverter drive units.

Old place had a Bosch. New place does not. I miss the Bosch. I have also heard good things about Miele.

After flooding our kitchen twice and generally failing to spark joy, we finally upgraded to a Miele. It's really nice.
