70% off...of what?

I have an addiction. Even though I am not in the market for an aircraft, I spend a few minutes every morning looking over the new ads on Barnstormers. I found this one, and I thought it was funny:

The ad says "70% off"...off of what? Off of the price he mentioned before? The ad is so vague, I don't even know if he selling an unopened kit, partially kit, partially built, or whatever...and a broker no less...
 
Good marketing idea, at least the seller caught your attention! :)
 
Are you implying there is something wrong with looking at Barnstormers daily, despite not being in the market? I just sold my extra spare airplane Wednesday. I looked at Barnstormers everyday before I sold and everyday since. I even have friends send me ads for Culver Cadets which I've thought about for a long time. I'm not looking to buy another airplane right now, but one never knows just when a great deal will pop up. :D
 
This one has been kicking around for a while. It's an ES fast build kit which indeed went for $100,000 ten years ago when Lancair was still selling them. The price has bene dropping on this...it used to be listed for $35,000. Don't forget you still need an IO-550 (will run about 45000+) and a prop and avionics.

Oh, I was not commenting on or defending the seller's valuation. I was just commenting on where the 70% figure came from. You need to compare his $30K asking price against the asking price of other kits for the same aircraft to decide if it's a good deal or not.

Take your logical nonsense and leave, before I accuse you of witchcraft, or spreading rumors that the earth is round. Either of those can get you burned at the stake.

Clearly, the gentleman involved paid 100 AMU for a kit, so thats what its worth. Ergo, offering to sell it for 30 AMU is indeed a 70% discount. You should just wire him the money ASAP, as its a really good deal. It is 70% off.
 
Nope, I believe $100K sounds like the right price for the super ES build kit TEN YEARS AGO when he bought it. Of course, the kit is obsolete. Lancair has moved on, though they do continue to offer support for it.

Well, I felt three was excessive. :D

Of course, all three are less combined that the original price of the OPs kit.

The "Award Winner" part of the post does make it sound like it's a completed airplane but I suspect that any completed Lancair ES offered for $30L is likely to be worthless. Maybe the kit's design won an award of some kind?
 
It's pretty much straight Lancair ad copy. They refer to the IV and the ES as "award winning."
