The electric trim in a Cherokee will often start slipping if it needs attention. The wheel should turn on its own, both directions, and smoothly. If it doesn't, shut the trim off and use it manually, still would want to make sure it works properly manually though.

Is electric trim a required item for the flight? Does the manual trim wheel work normally? How tough is that to figure out?

Last time this happened to me I found the trim cable hanging on by four strands. This was an Arrow, so likely an identical trim system.

I used to be astonished by the things I found during pre-flight ... especially since someone else had recently actually been airborne just prior to me in that condition.
