2017 in Review

I got my instrument rating and took my son flying in the right seat a bunch of times. Hopefully, I'll wrap up the commercial in the new year.

First year in our new Arizona digs ... explored the precincts, saw some amazing scenery, checked out the $100 pancake destinations, flew in the Navajo Christmas Airlift ... and best of all, met up with some terrific POA folks.

Here's looking at you, @problematique, @Walboy, @CT4ME, @Timbeck2, @Naithan Scott, @pmanton. Looking forward to meeting more local POA'ers soon.
 
Got my PPL this year I did it part time, beat weather, revolving Cfi's, maintenance squawks and availability of airplanes.

#1. Flew a Champ

#2. Flew a J3 Cub

#3. Flew a Cirrus SR22

#4. Flew a Piper Archer

#5. Flew a Cessna 172

#6. Right seat in a Pilatus PC-12, (Simply because I asked someone who owns one)

#7. Planning on my first airplane purchase after retirement
in a few years. I will have more time to fly it.

(2018) (The future is always uncertain but alas I plan anyway)

#1. Attend Sun and Fun, (I do every year)

#2. Attend Osh for the first time. So excited for this one!!

#3. Harass more POAers with a "Which airplane is best for me" thread :)

#4. Get more information on Bahamas travel and fly to Walkers cay which is deserted

#5. Help out POAers as much as my limited knowledge can carry just to return the favor
because I'm grateful for all of the help I received in the past. Thanks guys!!
 
Stuff I did in 2017:
- Transferred up to NYC, which involved getting typed in the 737.
- Got engaged.

Goals for 2018:
- More GA. I’ve been slacking, and need to get back into it. There’s a club with a late model 182 that I’m planning on getting involved with.
- Don’t knock up the fiancèe :)

The year isn't over yet!

So far this year I've done two trips to the Canadian bush as well as a few longer cross countries in the States. Flew the float plane to Oshkosh (first time going to Airventure too) and did a fair amount of local recreational flying. I instructed a bit too. I've probably flown 400ish hours so far this year and I'd guess I might get another 25 in before 01 January.

We'll see what next year brings. I'd like to do some ski flying this winter and have a float trip planned for spring so I think I'll be off to a decent start.

1. Broke in new cylinders
2. Completed my longest cross countries to date
3. Completed flight review
4. Met eman1200, Frank Durham, flysince9, Mark Kolber, SkyDog and another guy whose handle I can't recall
5. Met Grum.Man and flew his Yankee before he sold it
6. Made my first $100 burger run at FQD
7. Landed on a 36-foot wide runway, twice, with crosswinds
8. Filled all the pages in my first log book
9. Made my first (ever) straight in approach and landing
 
1. Lost a flight instructor & friend to cancer. It sucks.
2. Joined a new flying club
3. Checked out in the club Archers. (& 172 but that's easy.)
4. Flew sporadically over the summer. Did get in a trip to Gainesville to visit my son.
5. Restarted my IR to beat the written deadline
6. Got checked out for night flying in the club. In a plane I'd never flown before. Fun.
7. Found out just how rusty I am at Instrument flying.
 
Flipped 14k on my personal hobbs.
Didn't get fired.
Didn't quit in anger.
Got all but my mortgage paid off.
Got an awesome picture of me flying my Tango.

For next year...
Try to get close to 15k so I flip in early 2019.
Build another bedroom full of furniture.
Get at least 50 hours on my T-Craft.
Build up my war chest.
 
1. Landed at PBI 45 minutes before Air Force One, taxied right by it on departure a couple days later.
2. Worked a few days at Sun-n-Fun, the highlight for me me was, while wondering thru camping looking at airplanes, I ran into a buddy that I flew with 23 years ago and hadn't seen in 10 years.
3. Got type rated in the CE-650.
4. Flew the jet to Oshkosh.
5. Flew with a friend to New Orleans for the Patriots/Saints game.
6. Flew to Costa Rica.
7. Flew the LOC/DME into Aspen for real, done it it the sim several times.
8. Flew into Las Vegas for the first time. As visually stunning as this was, what overcame me the most was personal. As the city came into sight, I couldn't help but think that this was the last place I saw a good friend. After I landed, I realized it was the second anniversary of the day we lost him way too soon. Cancer sucks.
9. On the departure from Vegas, got to see the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.
10. Got to take my family on a few Pilatus trips.
11. Got my SI renewed so I can continue to enjoy this journey.

took wife on first GA vacation, she went from tolerating it to really being in favor of it
started IR training (2 lessons in)
Logged not enough hours, though IR training this month will get it up a bit

Flying whenever I can and weather god agrees

Flew with Kate across the country and put her in her new home

Get IR.
Train for commercial and do some mock checkride. Not going to jump thru class 2 medical hoops

Myself, I bought a SportCruiser... 52hrs on it so far
Started CFI training... have all the endorsements, need UA & SR
Flew a C310R... love the sound and performance but miss the glass
Flew a Cirrus SR22T... beautiful plane and like the side yoke except for the spring detents on the ailerons
Flew a new Skylane with AC... sure nice in the TX heat
 
Got my IR
Got my CSEL
Got my CMEL
Got my CFI

Twas a good year and that’s only the aviation stuff.
 
Haven't closed the logbook on 2017 just yet, but so far:

Looks like I'll finish with around 230 hours for the year. A little less than planned, but I was recalled to active duty for the hurricane season and was a bit busy for a couple months...

Highlights:
-Flew my Beech 18 coast to coast (Norfolk to San Diego and back)
-Did the first family Disney World trip in the Beech 18
-Sold my first airplane
-Made my first flights into TEB (in the Beech 18 of all things)
-Got promoted to O5/CDR in the reserves
-Did my first sim-based recurrent training for the Citation
-Flew one of the last two remaining operational L-1011 sims left in the world
-Started a new contract gig that should lead to alot of flying in 2018

And finally, bought a T-6 for Christmas

This. Totally made my Friday, and it's early.
 
This year was an adventure.

Sold my house in 36 hours. Had 2 purchases fall through right before closing (one 7 days before, one 12 days before)
Moved into temp housing (extended stay hotel) with 2 dogs, wife and 4 year old for almost 3 weeks
Moved again into a house we almost bought the first round of shopping, which ended up a great home.

Got an awesome (legit, not hyperbole) change at work. Will probably change my life for the better.

Finally closed on a plane (see avatar pic) After numerous flakes, failures and freak issues with finding a plane, I found, closed and bought a solid honest plane. Oh, flew it home. California to Chicago area. KREI to KSEZ day one. KSEZ to KDPA (with stops along the way) the next. If anyone cares- (KREI --KSEZ--KMHK--KDPA) Was one of those things I will remember on my death bed type experience tying down MY plane at home after flying it home. I still remember the last approach and landing in every detail. I couldnt have done it without my buyers agent and the ferry pilot. Both went over and above to help a stranger like me.

Dont want to tempt fate, but after years of plowing through doo-doo, something aligned this year and clicked. Or I stopped being dumb and got out of my own way. Either or.

Now finishing up my insurance checkout. 2018 will be getting to know the plane better, and finishing up my IR.

The stark difference between Jan 1 and Dec 31st this year is just crazy. Now I just have to be smart or lucky enough to not screw it up.
