1st class medical with broken hand

My grandson begins his freshman year at Averett University in August and has his medical scheduled for Aug 1st. This week he fell and broke two bones in his right hand and had to have pins. How and to what extent will this affect his medical, little and ring finger behind the knuckle.

As long as he can show normal dexterity, it's not going to be an issue. If he's in a cast or otherwise immobilized, he probably wants to hold off going for ANY class of medical.
If he doesn't get full dexterity back, it's still possibly issuable. I knew of a guy who got his first class back after losing an entire arm. Of course, the airline wasn't too keen on having him back. He went to work for the NTSB.

Many aviation tracks with a part 141 spin or partnering with the cadet and fastrack programs of the regionals ask for a first class.

Not sure if it actually is part of any FARs, but it is definitely a requirement of many programs.

That's better than taking his tuition and he not be able to get his first class later. I've seen that complaint on here before.

It's not part of the FARs. A first class is not required until you need to act as an ATP. That's a long way off. They just likely are requiring it so they don't get burned if the guy is not certifiable and they;ve already bilked him and possibly the federal government out of tuition money for an education which will be impossible for him to use.

Interesting. Still think it's a crap shoot anyway since your health can change as soon as you walk out the door.
