    Update on Catalina Baron crash

The pilot made it clear he had no intention of staying overnight. None of the passengers expressed anything contrary. They weren't going to call the sheriff, a cab, or anything else. This is a classic example of cascading errors. Poor maintenance led to a delay. The takeoff after dark was a...

    DOGE and the FAA

I'm not addressing the overall DoD budget, just the O&M expenditures, which is where "use it or lose it" is normal practice. I have 36 years of experience in or with DoD, and not once have I seen a "spend whatever it takes" approach. Quite the opposite. Everyone is scared shirtless of...

    DOGE and the FAA

IMO the "use or lose" system sounds worse than it is. Everyone can come up with ridiculous examples, but most of the time I have seen it used to cover the myriad of legitimate unforseen needs that arise. In a perfect world, military orgs would be able to accurately budget and execute...

    Android Pilots guidance

Use your phone. Screen size and res are plenty, and you'll have more mounting options. If you have your previous phone, use it as dedicated with your current phone as backup. Consider trying Garmin Pilot. I think you get some extra functionality with the GDL.

    DOGE and the FAA

Musk has been pretty vocal about the FAA being in his crosshairs. https://www.space.com/spacex-elon-musk-faa-administrator-resign

    DOGE and the FAA

I can't say for sure, but I suspect it's mixed. On the one hand, he has a track record of ruthless cost cutting in business. User fees could be an easy target. On the other hand, he's all about innovation, and he has been outspoken about the FAA regulatory environment as an inhibitor. That...

    Update on Catalina Baron crash

I think that's backwards. If you recharge a dead battery off an alternator, it can damage the cells of the battery due to the high rate of charge. Better to put the battery on a charger at a lower amperage.

    DOGE and the FAA

Nobody bats 1.000 when taking those kinds of risks. Hard to argue with the aggregate result: richest man in the world. At this point, many of his enterprises are no longer straight business plays anyways. Twitter, for example. He lost some market value, but used it to help his favored...

    DOGE and the FAA

I think it is mostly theatrics. However, Musk has demonstrated extraordinary talent for doing things believed to be impossible. So who knows what crazy rabbit he'll pull from his latest hat?

    Flying to Florida

I like going over the top of JAX. Airport traffic is east-west so it de-conflicts nicely, and the scenery is great.

That should be a pretty sharp horizon in direction of flight then.

    Update on Catalina Baron crash

Wow, at night that would be the black hole of all black holes. Pilot's eyes were probably not yet adjusted to the dark as well. And I'll bet the panel lighting was bright, with several glass displays. He was completely blind the moment he crossed the departure threshold. Could be as simple...

    Update on Catalina Baron crash

Question about the airfield. Is maneuvering off runway heading necessary to achieve terrain clearance on departure?

How much did poor training contribute to this accident?

Acceptable losses are inherent in the development of training requirements. If no loss was acceptable, PPL would take 250 hours and include all instrument and commercial skills. 40 hours is a compromise. Make pilot status attainable with a reasonable effort, while keeping the mayhem at a...

    coordination on steep turn exit

Dutch rolls are better in aircraft with centerline seating. I do them as warmup before every acro practice session in my Decathlon. I have a contrasting mark at eye level on my windshield brace. I use that as a "gunsite" ... put it on a spot of sky and hold it while I roll 45-45. No turns...

The increased number of rotors is offset by much less complex power train. Each fixed pitch rotor is directly attached to a motor, with no gearing, cyclic, or collective.
