Dug the Smoker Out of the Garage; Should Have Done That Long Ago...

Take 2: Goin' spicy this time. Made my own rub from scratch and injected the 7lb butt with a hot sauce made from my home-grown jalapeños. I have a BBQ sauce simmering away with all sorts of spice while I sit out here enjoying the aroma accompanied by a couple fingers of Highland Park 12 year...

Got a new Glock... Or so I thought...

The only thing I've never had jam is the single-shot break-open 20 gauge...

Finally made it into the flight levels

I brought a Turbo 182T to FL190 once simply for the "I've been in the flight levels" feeling.

Got a new Glock... Or so I thought...

Looked at the 229 seriously, but I think for my next toy I'm looking at a USP Tactical 45 with an AAC Ti-Rant. Gotta have a bit of fun...

Got a new Glock... Or so I thought...

I got a new Glock 34 a few days ago for my birthday, and was browsing through the booklet and came across something very unsettling. In the TOC there is an entire chapter labeled "Clearing Malfunctions (Jams)." But how can that be? Did I get a cheap Chinese knock-off??? I've always heard...

EFB versus paper charts and plates on checkride

The GPS database does not have to be current. You can use an expired database assuming you have confirmed that the lat/long for the way-points being used is current. So just because the database isn't current doesn't mean you can't fly, and definitely doesn't mean the aircraft is "technically...

Bugsmasher reaches 733 knots as per FlightAware

I bet you were also that 170 at FL360 the other week...

Strangest thing you've ever seen on a runway?

Golf balls on 8R/26L at KSUS because apparently it's "fun" to drive balls towards airplanes... On the same runway, I once found a bag full of Einstein bagels and a box of coffee. My theory is that they left them sitting on the wing and didn't do a proper final walk-around. If I were them...

What is your shortest Cross country?

Skyhaven (KRCM) to Flying Horse Field and back; 2.0nm each way. A friend had never landed on grass, so I figured why not? My shortest IFR flight (in IMC) was Creve Coeur (1H0) to Spirit of St. Louis (KSUS); 7.8nm

Declaring an emergency to get off the ground?

I can't really think of any. Perhaps if you had someone shooting at you to hijack, I suppose fire-walling it and taking off is about your only option. Or a doomsday-movie style fault-line opening up so you have to takeoff in your 310 to avoid getting killed... I do remember an ATC recording...

    Ahh, thanks.

    Need help with Wnb Pro

Wasn't Jesse involved with WnB Pro? I bought it years ago, but haven't used it since ForeFlight's integrated W&B was released... (6.3, about a year ago, IIRC)

Why Does a Space Launch TFR Have Wings?

I already posted ForeFlight's above... One thing that ForeFlight and Skyvector have wrong (not sure about others) is the altitudes. The NOTAM states it's SFC-Unlimited, but they show it as SFC-99,900'. Looks like I have to postpone my my sub-orbital testflight of my JATO-powered 172...

Why Does a Space Launch TFR Have Wings?

Because they don't, and that visualization from SkyVector is wrong. If you read the NOTAM, it states it's a 30nm arc: And ForeFlight's visualization is correct:

    Thinking About a Tractor

Well, sure, but every person's "meaningful capacity" differs. He didn't specify, but with only 11 acres, it can't be much. As I said, I have no problems with the compact doing some dirtwork, moving gravel, pulling stumps, moving firewood, some rough snow plowing, some rough grading, ect. What...

    Thinking About a Tractor

Sounds like a compact tractor would be the ticket. I have roughly the same mission as Ted laid out, but a bit larger at over 100 acres. I'm running a 20-hp John Deere 4100 with: - 410 frontloader with larger 64" bucket - 5' King Kutter brush hog (I've whacked 3"-4" diameter trees with it) - 5'...

Dug the Smoker Out of the Garage; Should Have Done That Long Ago...

I think the sweet meat, the tangy sauce, and the smooth cigar really all helped compliment the Scotch, which ended up being the piece de resistance of the evening. I don't think it would have to be done... I didn't for 11.5 hours today. I had the water dish in the smoker to help maintain...

Dug the Smoker Out of the Garage; Should Have Done That Long Ago...

But then you'd have to open the door to get them out... Is doing so not as big of a deal as some make it out to be?

Dug the Smoker Out of the Garage; Should Have Done That Long Ago...

Thanks for the tips! I know the kettle is not ideal, but unfortunately for now it's all I have at my farm... I smoke some fish on it without much trouble, but I'll try moving on to doing some other meats. I'll just have to play around with it. Damn, more deliciously smokey flesh to ingest...
