    Daily Pic

Out for a joyride to the Mississippi river and back today camera can't capture the colors very well, it was very scenic, lit-up clouds. And from a few days ago, over Aurora IL. And a rainy Chicago in the distance on the lakeshore. yep.. more rain in the distance. But earlier that...

2 Delta workers killed at ATL after tire explosion 8/27/24

Google suggests 200psi, but I'm sure someone will drop by to confirm. Frankly I didn't think people could be killed by tire explosions, but then I googled and saw this RC NASA vehicle designed specifically to pop tires. This was for NASA, not for commercial 737s and the like.. "An exploding...

PIREP of KELP - El Paso

Yessir! It's an amazing view they have there. Stumbled on it by accident while cruising through the mountains area. Had to get (a lot) of pictures :)

Talk Me Out of a Cirrus

How about a Turbo 210? Maybe even pressurized. Useful load won't be a problem. Many are FIKI. And I think it cruises faster than a Lance? From a specs POV they look solid. And you'd save yourself like half that 600k$ Cirrus budget! And not have to suffer the indignity of being fixed gear and...

PIREP of KELP - El Paso

I like KELP a lot. The only thing that was inconvenient is that when landing winds strongly favored RWY 22 but they were only using that for commercial/jet traffic. They asked me to take 26R. I didn't fuss over it, but it was a much stronger XW. Oh well. Still plenty big. Also, Atlantic FBO...

Need part number for Piper Arrow PA28R landing gear motor

@mandm The issue Bell206 highlights was my issue from a couple years ago. Worn brushes. Got the motor removed, sent out for repair at a local shop and replaced. Has worked great ever since. But the work was not cheap as a heads up.

    Calibrating EGT gauge

Great question, and no disagreement here. But also... Alcor puts it on there for a reason, so I imagine some people must be using it? IDK - I've never calibrated it and only ever used it as a relative tool, but I'm curious if others get any use out of calibrating.

    Calibrating EGT gauge

Each time I fly and lean the mixture I use my EGT gauge to track the highest EGT achieved with the yellow needle, then I add mixture until it comes down by 2-3 notches (50-75F). Here's my dial model for reference: I've never used the asterisk (*) marker that is 80% of the way up the dial as a...

    Grounded for not talking

That's a bummer after all the anticipation. Did it not have dual PTT/jacks?

    Fuel exhaustion event

Glad to hear everything was OK! Judging by your description you must have gone down just a short drive from my house. The only good news is that in this area (pretty much my entire AO), you'd have your pick of corn/soy fields in case that private rwy hadn't been there. Lots of forgiving places...

VFR in the mountains - Part II

Did he descend into the wrong valley? I don't recall that detail. I thought he navigated between alternates in search for an acceptable VFR airport until fuel made that no longer a feasible strategy?

Thanks for all the answers folks - this gives me a good starting point for due diligence.

VFR in the mountains - a cautionary tale, especially for us flatlanders

It kind of helps reinforce what I've heard a lot of people say: they only wanna do mountain flying on calm wind, CAVU days, or darn near. After my high DA/mtn flying course last year near Denver I waited for 2 days that were supposed to be pure VFR to get OK weather so I could try on my own...

    Opinion on Plane Purchase

FWIW, I bought my airplane in 2020. It's last overhaul was 1993. Between 2003 and 2020 it only flew ~250 hours. The engine got some attention from G&N after I bought it (an expected expense), but after dropping about $7k on that it's performed great for the last 700 hours. I know everyone's case...

    ...

If you have good ADM the worst fate you'll be tempting on a VFR XC is encountering occasional inconvenience and delays. As a new PPL, doing longer XCs is liberating. It's a great way to build hours while getting new experiences and seeing new places. Plus it makes you feel like a real pilot...

    $50. Oil filter

I use Tempest S/N 48103-2. Champion costs +60% more and affords no benefit to me in an arrow. They installed it at annual and it irked me a little. Seems like unnecessary cost. The filter still gets swapped out at the same oil change interval so it's not like it lasts longer... I will say the...

    ...

IFR is the conventional choice (and probably for a good reason). I got obsessed with VFR flying after getting my plane right after PPL and constantly doing XCs and skipped ifr training (and I regret it). The rest of the endorsements you'll be able to knock out collectively in like 2 days, so...

    [NA] buying land

That's really interesting - thanks for the background. I guess in the Midwest I've been spoiled into thinking water availability is just a given. I would not have expected that a proven water supply would have a material effect on land pricing. And hearing that it impacts Idaho? That's...
