    Help with LAX "Mini Route"

So after getting the squawk code from SMO/HHR, do you just listen to LAX-tower, or do you give them a heads-up to tell them you're on frequency?

    Where's Dr. Bruce?

I've got pretty thick skin, but I most certainly don't want to frequent an environment where that thickness is tested constantly. In time, an abrasive will rub through even the toughest armor. I hope he'll be back and continue to share and advocate for us all.

    Prop Balancing Tomorrow...

Thanks for all the great info. Prop balance will have to go on my wish-list, after the new GPS though.

    Request your best speed

Flying a C-152 (PPL training), I was once asked for best speed while on final, because another aircraft was on a 10mi final (he had priority). We pushed as hard as we could and hit the brakes hard, then turned off the runway just in time to see the other aircraft land. NUQ, parallel runways...

Be Nicer to the FAA Call Center People!

I've had very few interactions with the FAA - but they've all been positive. With my most recent interaction, I was really sweating bullets (lost airworthiness certificate). Tome was great, and had the issue resolved with minimal fuss (much less effort than I'd expected). Rudeness is often...

Found at Wright Cycle Shop in Dayton

Not specifically stated, but there appears to be a missing log-book entry. I'm not trying to get anyone in trouble, so let's not pass that piece of info on to the inspector - maybe he/she won't notice.

Compounding Benefits with Pilots N Paws?

Is there any interest in the N. Oregon area for combining activities during a PNP mission? With a bit of collaboration, I see a triple-benefit: 1) Animals get the transport they need 2) I get some hood-time (in training for IFR) 3) Safety pilot gets to log time too (as a necessary crew...

    Grumman Tiger engine cost

Can I assume that these prices include removal, replacement, and all other labor & small-part charges? I'm still a long ways away, but plan to get there eventually (hopefully later, and not sooner).

10 years from now, this story will be funny

Good things come to those who practice - keep at it. When I solo'd, I was so nervous - it was very unexpected. It was a busy, controlled field, with a typical 5 planes in the pattern whenever I flew (PAO). I talked myself through the whole pattern, from upwind all the way around to final...

This guy might be able to offer pointers on proper touch-and-go's

Too bad Long Beach doesn't allow T&G on 16/34 - we could really rack-up the numbers if they'd let us. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KLGB Maybe Santa Monica would like to host this as a fund-raising event ... :D

    More school administrator stupidity.

It can't even be legal for an administrator to capriciously deny access to a public place - I'd think there's a legitimate law suit here.

5th Grade Field Trip to an Airport?

When I was a kid, my school class took a trip to Palo Alto airport and one parent gave the whole class rides, 3 kids at a time. That event was what turned me into a pilot 10 years later. Sure, that first flight was 40 years ago in a much less cowardly society, but there are still a few adults...

    Current - After a 40 Year Break

 Congratulations, and welcome back. I too took a long break (26 yrs), but I'm current and working in the IFR. I think the IFR is a good way to sharpen some of the duller skills. When I look up on a clear day, I no longer have to say "I used to ...". When I look up on a cloudy day, I'm...

Help Me Decide: Garmin 430 or 650?

Thanks so much for all the help. I left a post at lunch, and I've got a bunch of experience and a few jokes by the time I get home from work - you guys rock! I'll have to check out the Avidyne. Right now I'm just VFR, but taking lessons for IFR (which is why I'm upgrading). The Tiger is...

Help Me Decide: Garmin 430 or 650?

I've got an ancient GPS and need to upgrade to an IFR unit. A used 430W was the initial choice, but for ~$3k more I can put in a new 650W. I'm inclined to go with the 650, but would appreciate opinions of anyone who's tried it. The aircraft is a Grumman Tiger. Thanks, Ted N4544P
