So after getting the squawk code from SMO/HHR, do you just listen to LAX-tower, or do you give them a heads-up to tell them you're on frequency?

I've got pretty thick skin, but I most certainly don't want to frequent an environment where that thickness is tested constantly. In time, an abrasive will rub through even the toughest armor. I hope he'll be back and continue to share and advocate for us all.

I've got an ancient GPS and need to upgrade to an IFR unit. A used 430W was the initial choice, but for ~$3k more I can put in a new 650W. I'm inclined to go with the 650, but would appreciate opinions of anyone who's tried it. The aircraft is a Grumman Tiger. Thanks, Ted N4544P
