Plane catches fire in Georgetown DE

Still smoke at the far end of the grass fire and what looks like fire fighters standing pretty far back in the field too. Old, dry, dead grass probably burned and left the live stuff behind.

Bummer. Play with fire.... Grew up near there. Big open desert with a giant restricted area. Beautiful arid landscape and some amazing history.

Ammount of time to get private license

Her words were, "You were a very . . . studied student." She hesitated to think of a good word. Haha. I am sure I made some kind of impression. I recall us both being very stubborn. There were four students that started that semester with her as an instructor and I was the only one to stick...

Ammount of time to get private license

Took me 56 hours. I was held back a little because my instructor was fresh and I was her first ever student. She was nervous letting me go. I was down in Douglas, AZ so there is not airspace, ground time, routing argument for me there. Funny thing, I saw here a week ago. I was walking...

Building a SDR CTAF monitor. Advice?

I used the RLTSDR from my Stratux project to monitor some local aviation bands at one point. They will do it just fine. They have a ridiculously large bandwidth they listen to but that also means they are mediocre at most frequencies. I think a good antenna with a real ground plane will help...

You see a plane coming at you with seconds to react.

Is this the story that was mentioned a while back that got James331 and the poster in a big keyboard warrior match about jump pilots and right-of-way? I think it ended with "I will beta blast your Cherokee out of my way at the fuel pumps."

Plane catches fire in Georgetown DE

Good job on him. I had an electrical burning smell in a 182 about 10 feet off the ground. Short field and full of paying customers didn't allow me to put it down and stop. I climbed to about 400 agl, turned around in the canyon, and put the airplane back down. That was very nerve racking...

    Flight Bag You Actually Use

My main zipper failed a year ago so in my typical fashion, I ripped the stitches and sewed in a new one. Cost me about six dollars. It's nice to have a backpack you've kept for a LONG time. I'm sure you have lots of fond memories with pack you had to part with.
