IO-470 Intake Manifold

There must be a secret to removing and installing the inner bolts that attach the intake manifold to the cylinder on an IO-470. The nuts for the exhaust manifold are no problem, but the bolts for the intake manifold are buried (see picture). I have tried grinding down sockets but even then I can't get a good grip on the head of the bolt. I am guessing there is some super-expensive TCM tool, but at this point I will pay the price. Help! Any feedback about where to find the right tool for the job is really appreciated! ...Rob

Tried that - not enough room even after cutting down the length of the socket itself. I have tried every standard tool I can find without success. I am thinking there must be a special tool or a special trick that I haven't thought off yet. There are so many IO-470s out there I am sure someone has figured this out. Thanks for the reply!
 
Norm, you're killing me buddy... so what does it take to bribe you to give up the secret code?
 
Small box end wrench & torch time to bend it. Grind the face slightly so that you get full engagement of the shallow head.

This makes good sense and it sounds like you have done this before... thanks very much for the feedback!
 
I've never had a problem removing those bolts with common sockets and extensions. Use a wobble extension.
 
small/shallow 1/4" drive socket with universal and extension....should get it out.

If that doesn't work....grind some flats on the socket and use an open end wrench on the flats.

a 1/4 in drive 6point socket cut on a lathe .
 
there should be plenty room to get a shallow swivel socket on that bolt.

Snap On makes the ones that work best on those manifold bolts. Just be prepared to sell you first-born.
 
Swivel sockets... I forgot about them - thanks for the picture! I had tried a swivel extension which did not work, but the swivel socket might just work. Going to try this before building a custom wrench. While on this subject, what is the correct torque for these manifold bolts once I put this thing back together? Appreciate the great feedback!!!
