    Router advice

FWIW I used a Linksys router (with WiFi) for years with little trouble. However, it started hanging up (would pass no data) after a few days or a week. No reason was ever identified - but powering it down and restarting it always cleared the problem. I decided that it was time to replace it...

    Round runway airport?

Not in the US, but Tempelhof airport in Berlin, Germany was round (and all grass). Later on, conventional paved runways were added: https://www.archdaily.com/136792/berlin-tempelhof-airport-gross-max-sutherland-hussey-architects/masterplan-9 Dave

    Tire air pump for hangar

Update: I found a clip-on adapter that the stock threaded chuck screws onto directly. Here is what the seller called it "8mm Clip On 5/16'' Auto Car Tire Inflator Valve Connector Air Chuck Brass". Found on eBay for about $1.50 plus shipping. Big improvement! Dave

If I had a gazillion Dollars to spend on aviation I would:

The Goodyear Airdock in Akron, OH (where the Akron and Macon were built) is still there: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodyear_Airdock . It would be nice to see it used for Lighter Than Air Aviation again. BTW I grew up off the end of the runway at Akron Airport (which was a Naval Air Station...

SoCal High Dez peeps..... you solid?

Aftershock! Just now (2021 PDT Friday. Identical to the first one where I sit. Dog slept through it (as before). However, he is old. Wife didn't notice, son away. Dave

SoCal High Dez peeps..... you solid?

Sitting in my office chair I felt it rocking gently side to side - then noticed the vertical blinds and venetian blind rod swaying. The rod continued swaying for at least a minute. Nothing rattled or fell. Wife noticed, son (in bathroom) did not. Dog slept thru it. No reports of damage around...

When Did (Car) Brake Jobs Become So Expensive?

Shops charge rates like you mention because they can get away with it - too many customers who don't think they have a choice. I have done many brake jobs myself - and still do. For more complex work my solution is to look for a capable Mobile Mechanic (they exist). Awhile back I had one such do...

    Amazon's apparently experimental drone fleet

Here is what I came up with when I Googled the Model Number of one type: https://dronelife.com/2019/06/06/see-amazons-new-delivery-drone-fly-will-your-stuff-be-delivered-by-drone-within-months/ Dave

    The spammers are getting clever

Yesterday I got an email from a supposed law firm informing me that "the city" was taking legal action against me (didn't say what city) - and to click on the link for further information (I didn't). Seeing as how I do not live in any city, own no property in one, nor have any other connection...

    Electrickery!!!

Not in the same league as some of the experiences related in this thread, but when I was maybe 12 my cousins (who lived on a farm) got a horse to ride. So of course they offered me the chance to try it. All went well until the horse walked over to the electric fence, and "tasted" a white...

    [N/A] HE Washer Rant

I bought a new Maytag over/under washer/dryer in 1992 also - and still use them nearly every day. Had to replace the washer solenoid valve once, and have to tighten the clamp on the dryer blower wheel occasionally (when it starts making noise). hard to beat reliability like that! I wonder about...

The flight attendant comes over and notices this...

Once on a flight to Australia I was reading an aviation magazine. The Captain came by - and noticed it. We had a pleasant chat for a few minutes - and then he invited me up to the cockpit!. It was a (then) brand new 747. The crew gave me a nice tour of the flight deck. Fun times! Dave

    Tool preservation

The reason for all the rusty cars was/is salting the roads in winter. I'm from Ohio, and grew up with rusty cars everywhere. But then I moved to Michigan and found the problem to be much worse there. Let's just say that Michigan applied the salt is a much more liberal manner. I spent one...

    Visiting Midway Atoll

Funny - but the resolution leaves a lot to be desired. Here is a better quality video about them: Years ago there was a hilarious video entitled "the Gooney Birds of Midway Island" on one of the nature channels. This is probably it...

    Pythagoras' Theorem

Some people can teach and others can't. That seems to be especially true in math. I remember taking a math course in college that I just couldn't comprehend. I withdrew. Later I re-took it - this time with the prof who wrote the book (literally). Crystal Clear. I will never be a math whiz - but...

    Fanuc Robots

Quite a while back, but I saw a demo of an industrial robot in Japan - which was used to create a sculpture out of a block of ice. Fascinating! Dave

    Worlds Worst Roundabout

I have driven in Paris quite a few times over the years. My first encounter with the Arc de Triomphe was comical. I somehow got in the innermost lane - and had an awful time escaping. Next time I was there they had installed barricades to limit the circle to two lanes. Seemed to work better -...
