So that's why we practice no-flap landings!

This is why I don't like mechanical flaps and trim. They aren't failure proof but I trust them more. I know when I did training we did all flap configuration landings. Carl

$100 hamburger out of DEN area

One possible stop is LHX. Their isn't a restaurant on the field but their is one in walking distance down the road at the golf course and it isn't half bad. Another is of course to COS and head over to the airplane restaurant right off the airport.. again walkable. FTG is another one...

Blue Angels & Thunderbirds coming back in 2014

I will believe this when they actually fly the whole season. The Joint Chiefs testified in the past few weeks before the House Armed Services committee. The issues facing the services budgets if they don't lift the sequester are very considerable in 2014 and crippling in 2015. Not so say they...

Most beautiful place to learn flying?

I learned to fly in Colorado. The view of the Rockies off to the west of the field is pretty majestic. The winter mornings are just incredible. I went on to get my tailwheel endorsement and also do some float plane training in Alaska and it was absolutely awe inspiring. I would rank those...

First gen pilots, how were you introduced to GA?

I had flown in the back of USAF recce jets for over 5500 hours and got to fly both C-135 and C-130 based aircraft from the right seat just for fun on long missions. It was fun but I never had the time to head over the the aero club on base to work on my license. I was also stationed overseas...

Sports Pilot logging hours in a non-LSA aircraft?

Actually as a sport pilot I can fly internationally but currently the only country that recognizes the certificate is the Bahamas. There is an annual fly out to the Bahamas from the Light Sport Expo in Sebring every year. Here is a ref from AOPA that talks about limitations and...

Sports Pilot logging hours in a non-LSA aircraft?

So I am a sport pilot. The back of my certificate says under XII Limitations: Sport Pilot Endorsements: Airplane Single Engine Land Holder does not meet ICAO requirements The second bit is because of the lack of medical I believe. Carl

    Jeppesen Mobile Flightdeck VFR

I agree that Foreflight seems to work best for flight planning and their one touch measurement function seems to work great. I think the Jepp app might be good for use in flight but I haven't tried it in the plane yet. I purchased it at OSH and have not been happy with the rate of additional...

Would training in an LSA make you a better pilot?

I learned in a LSA and got my SP cert in one. I have just over 300 hours and most of them are in LSA's. With that said, flying a Cessna seems a lot easier to me now. As others have mentioned the lower weight and issues related to winds in the end game can make LSA's challenging. I went to...

Can somebody explain to me the general disdain for SP?

I guess I will enter the fray as it were :) As a sport pilot with 300 hours total time, owner of a LSA (Aero AT-4/Gobosh 700) and builder of a Vans RV-12, I have some opinions on the value of the SP certificate. I agree there are some things I can't do as a SP. I don't want to fly at night, I...

Anyone opt for light sport instead?

I couldn't agree more. I learned in a school that at the time was LSA only in Denver. They had two locations and six LSA's of different flavors. They merged with a "real" flight school and it was interesting. The LSA group was fun and we had club flyouts and the people were much closer...

Anyone opt for light sport instead?

I got my SP cert two years ago this past May. I am just about to go over 300 hours total time. In those little over two years I have flown from Colorado Springs to Sebring FL solo, Oshkosh multiple times, Tucson, Albuquerque multiple times as well as a bunch of other trips of varying length...

    My Sport Pilot Training Blog/Thread

I don't know if you have ever seen the EAA Sport Pilot training series by Brady Lane? He did a video series from lesson one through his check ride with a good explanation of approach in each lesson. I watched it all before I did my SP training. It is a good reference for you to watch. His...

    1st project- Onex

I am seriously considering selling my RV-12 sub kits and buying the Onex to build. I went up to the factory for the builders workshop and it was outstanding. Anyone thinking about the Sonex, Onex, etc, go to the builders workshop. I really like the idea of an aerobatic LSA with folding wings...

Sport Pilot "Class B/C/D endorsement" before checkride?

Ok I found out the reason for my confusing statement and sorry about that. As a SP Student, per FAR 61.94 the CFI has to issue an endorsement prior to solo flight for a specific B/C/D airport that the student will be soloing at if they are soloing in one of those airspaces. That endorsement as...

Sport Pilot "Class B/C/D endorsement" before checkride?

As a sport pilot student prior to solo my CFI had to endorse me for Class D operations as I was soloing at a class D airport. I chose to wait to get my B/C endorsement until after my SP check ride. I think it worked out fine. Carl
