External GPS for Rocky Mountain West??

I live in Colorado Springs and have flown all over CO, AZ, NM, WY and MT and haven't had issues with iPad GPS reception on the iPad. I don't use it all the time on those flights, but haven't seen any real problems. I also have a GDL-39 which will provide external GPS and it works great as...

    Who is all going?

I will be flying from Colorado Springs Friday to Mount Vernon IL to fly in the Air Venture Cup 400 mile cross country air race the Sunday before the show to Wausau and then into the show Sunday afternoon. We will be parked with the rest of the race planes near show center. Come by the AVC tent...

    Flight Aware and Flight Following

You can ask for a NAS or (National AirSpace) code when you fly a cross country. With a NAS code, I find that my flights show up most of the time. When I met with the controllers at Colorado Springs approach they said either asking for a NAS code directly, or even better saying you want a code...

    F16 vs Cessna 150 collision

Has anyone found anything on LiveATC from the event? I know this wouldn't not relieve anyone of responsibility to see and avoid, but I use flight following almost every time I fly. I have had some close calls and have had some good point outs by ATC out here in the Colorado Springs and Denver...

    O200 rough, failed runup

So I know I will probably upset some purists here. I fly a LSA and of course the 162 is a LSA. I get the desire to fly with a "real" airplane engine. I will say however that probably 90% of LSA's fly with Rotax engines, as does mine. I a am based at an airport at 6800 ft with DA regularly at...

    Garmin GDL-39

I bought the 39 3D and love it. I use it primarily with the Garmin 796, but have used it with the Garmin Pilot app also. I am consistently impressed with the traffic it sees around Denver and Colorado Springs. I of course am constantly looking for traffic and almost always use flight...

Why do CFI's Discourage Sport Pilot

I got my SP first at KAPA, so it was a busy towered airport. I then flew about 300 hours and got my PP. I did a similar thing with the night time requirements knocking those out and the flight by ref to instruments as well as some air time doing some maneuvers to touch up. It was really not a...

Air Force Academy Students into APA in Denver

Yeah I also like when they are getting flight following and try to use the military designator for the Cirrus with Denver approach. That too never works and they eventually have to say they are a Cirrus. It is interesting to see where the conversation got to. I think I will just ask a...

Air Force Academy Students into APA in Denver

I learned at APA and fly in and out of there often. I also listen to them on LiveATC with Denver approach as background noise. I can tell you that in my experience this is limited to the AFA folks. I flew in the backend of jets in the AF and I can't remember us using that call when coming in...

Flying into Oshkosh this year....get it off the bucket list

Watch the EAA Webinar online. This year's edition is tomorrow night. They go over the entire procedure as well as many of the questions you may have. It is a great experience and the webinar really helps get you up to speed. The main link to the EAA webinars can be found here...

Air Force Academy Students into APA in Denver

Yeah I agree with your comments re the students. I have heard this multiple times from their instructors though. Maybe I am just being overly sensitive but it drives me nuts to hear it every time. I agree on the see and avoid issues. This is a serious issue going into APA. Carl

Thinking of going to Air Venture for the first time

There is a twice a day at least bus service in and out of Milwaukee. My wife took it to the airport last year to fly home commercial while I flew my plane home. Check out the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh dorms. There is a link on the EAA Airventure web site. I booked a non-AC room and...

Air Force Academy Students into APA in Denver

Good point. I guess my point is that I usually hear quite a bit of professionalism on the part of most of the pilots going into there and an acceptance that it is a busy airport. I don't think the actions of the AFA guys reflect an acceptance of this. Carl

Air Force Academy Students into APA in Denver

Well the folks who fly jets into APA never seem to cause any issues with those of us flying GA in. It just sounds like a broken record to hear these folks calling in with the same call and getting the same question every time.

Air Force Academy Students into APA in Denver

Wondering if there are any AFA CFI's on the board here? I guess it is just an irritant to listen to.. but every time an AFA Cirrus comes into APA they call tower at 15-20 miles out and report inbound with ATIS for patterns. Every time, or nearly so, the tower says "great, do you want touch and...

    Private Pilot to Sport, requirements?

Well you can fly under SP rules at 10000 MSL or 2000 AGL. That lets those of us out here in CO go over the mountains if we choose, in our LSA's at 2000 ft AGL. This could mean going well above 10K. I have flown my LSA into both Buena Vista and Leadville as both a SP and PP. The key of course...

    Air Venture Cup Race

With Oshkosh coming up right around the corner, I thought I would post about one of the coolest ways to get there. The Air Venture Cup cross country air race is a great deal of fun and adds to the whole Oshkosh experience. We meet at the starting point the Friday before Oshkosh starts. We have...

Flying from Henderson NV to Salinas

I got up at 4AM last Thursday morning and it didn't look great to be able to make it the whole way due to low ceilings along some of the route as well as some not so nice looking forecasts coming back to Colorado this past Sunday. As it turns out, it was a good call. I used some miles with...

    Useful Sebsite

I am getting ready to fly to Salinas from Colorado for the AOPA fly in next weekend. I always like to look on YouTube at videos of people flying approaches into fields I haven't been to. The AFD is fine, but I like to see what the area and the field actually looks like on the approach. For...
