    100LL prices coming down?

So, what kind of decrease in the price of fuel would we see a material increase in activity? $4/gal? $3/gal? $2.50/gal? It just seems to me that the price of everything else, such as insurance, parts & complex service (engine and component O/Hs), not to mention the cost of new aircraft, has...

    General Aviation

I can't say it is the price of fuel. If you look at the average cost of AVGAS over the past 70 years. its been relatively stable. 80 octane in 1939 was 25 cents a gallon. Plug that into your handy dandy inflation calculator, and that spits out $4.21. Airnav puts the average price of 100LL at...

    Cockpit Controls with Unknown Functions

Some switches on older aircraft you DO need to be careful with. Some older "vintage" airplanes had flare dispensers. They can usually be spotted as three round holes with covers at the base of the fuselage. These aren't your run of the mill road flares, but bright, white hot magnesium...

DUAT and DUATS - What's the Difference?

That old 1-800 dial up number for your zesty fast 1200 baud modem was just the ticket! Before DUAT(s), you could get limited aviation weather information on the computer from CompuServe. Beyond that, it was TWEB and if I remember right, there was a touch tone based system you could get weather...

    Vans RV-10?

Hi Guys, You can't compare a $200k RV-10 to a similarly equipped/priced certified aircraft. The "life cycle" costs will be much, much different. Do your own MX vs A&P/IA Condition inspections vs annuals "experimental" avionics vs certified Parts vs PMA parts The list goes on.... At the...

    ADS-B vs Zaon XRX

I would nominally agree, but... I have WSI Sat weather already, and I really like the idea of the Zaon XRX + MX1090. You get ADSB and passive PCAS in one data stream. Now why Stratus and Garmin won't let you do that is annoying. Both boxes have serial ports that could connect to an XRX...

    ADS-B vs Zaon XRX

Not to resurrect a dead thread, but has anyone actually used the new Zaon MX1090? I see lots of ads for it, but I have yet to find a person who has used it. Richman

Tour of Lockheed Martin Flight Service (Ft. Worth, TX)

Unfortunately the IFR clearance delivery part of the LMFS still leaves a lot to be desired. If you call the National Clearance Delivery number, it takes about 5 minutes for the briefer to figure out who to call, then you're put on some kind of weird three way call with the ATC facility...you...

    Electric AC Compressor?

The factory system on Bonanzas is a Sanden 508 compressor, belt driven, with a 14 or 28v clutch as appropriate. The pilot sits on the evaporator and in older models, the cold air comes from vents in the lower console. The condenser sits in a pod roughly under the cargo area. It retracts and...

FAA wants the lead out by 2018

No. But they've apparently done a lot of flight testing.

FAA wants the lead out by 2018

Of course, GAMI G100UL has been flight tested for a few years now, and appears to be a drop in replacement, and even can be mixed with 100LL in the same tank. Swiftfuel also seems to work well, and is even fairly economical, from what I understand, if you eliminate the "bio" part and just use...

    Foreflight 5 is here.

Slow your roll there, chief. Do you think your fellow pilots are ALL drooling morons who fixate on a pretty picture in the cockpit? Ever stop to think that my airplane IS equipped with ADS-B out? Any additional information that can be provided is always an asset. How many times has the NTSB...

    Foreflight 5 is here.

I like FF a lot, but the traffic thing is wearing kinda thin. WingX and the Flightguide app allow display of data from a Zaon unit, and Garmin displays data from a GDL-39. Plus Zaon is coming out with its MX1090 device, which will transmit both PCAS data and ADSB traffic data. Richman

Anyone going to try the Zaon MX1090?

Hey All, Just curious if anyone has read up on this box, or have decided they are going to give it a try. Adding ADS-B data to the data from the XRX PCAS seems like a ready decent idea. Richman

    DUAT vs DUATS

I use DUAT because of their very cool iPhone app. Now if either provider could set up a "cancel/close IFR Flight Plan", that would be too cool (I know they'll do a VFR FP, but that doesn't help). Richman

Need a reference copy of STC SA793CE/new member

Getting copies of STCs, and their associated flight manual supplements can be tricky. Several years ago, the law was changed and they were reclassified them as "intellectual property". It wasn't so much for STCs that had a big hardware component to them, but rather to protect those that were...

    Insurance anyone?

I have to go with Ron here, ESPECIALLY about the umbrella liability policy. 2 million in coverage costs me about $30 a month. If you have any kind of assets, you shouldn't go without it. If you get any kind of passenger injury, you can bet the injured will drain your insurance THEN go after...
