    Do vortex generators reduce drag?

One of my CFIs put them on his C310 and it put the Vmc below the stall speed. I think that is definitely worth it. For those of use with Cherokees that handle just fine at slow speeds and have a most benign stall, meh :dunno:. I guess it'd be fun to fly really slow, and it would take some...

Another thought on the decline of GA.

I have friends who race cars in one of the cheapest racing leagues in existance, and they still spend annually about the same amount as I do on flying. And, they end up right back where they started, with not much interesting stuff to see enroute. Every time I fly I am still struck by the...

LP Mins - RNAV (GPS) Approach

Well the +V in LNAV+V is advisory vertical guidance. You still comply with the intermediate altitudes, which does provide obstruction clearance. The +V can be used to descend between intermediate altitudes or to do the final descent to the MAP. Me, I don't hold any truck with LNAV+V. Its...

Able to leap IFR Minimums in a single bound

It does seem like it has short legs. I think a lot of the currently marketed traveling machines are really focused on taking 1 or 2 people cross country. 3 is pushing it in a 4 place plane. OTOH, a Turbo retract Saratoga can go 6 hours with your 3 people at 155 kts. 3:12 vs 2:55 in the...

    Calculating Climb Gradient

I was gonna suggest that, but then I wouldn't have gotten to type "hypoteneuse".

    Owner Maintenance Philosophy

Yep, I just had a working vacuum pump replaced. It had over 800 hours, and I didn't feel comfortable flying blind behind it. I will overhaul or replace anything that is critical to IFR safety by time. Other things are on condition only. Belts, hoses, tires, engine, etc.

Is a space filled with potential particles, empty or full? That's philosophy (or semantics).

    Intro to Physics.

Those theories have been well disproven: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aether_theories by these guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelson-Morley_experiment Any physicist worth their salt can tell you off the top of their head how that experiment was done. Even better is that the physicist...

    Intro to Physics.

Yeah, we weren't allowed to graduate with a degree in Physics unless we could explain the concept of the aether and how it was disproven. It was a pretty dang simple experiment.

    Soil samples with Garmin 496

You should be able to create a user waypoint in the 496, check your manual. I have done something similar using a Garmin eTrex. Then I used "EasyGPS" freeware to get to the waypoint list that is in the GPS. You can then save the waypoint list to a file and reload it later if you want. This...

    Calculating Climb Gradient

I wouldn't add any, since almost any plane you'll be flying can meet the required climb gradient (unless you're starting at a high altitude) and the DP already has margin built into it. Interestingly some of the high performance singles we all drool over, don't have as steep of a climb...

    Calculating Climb Gradient

It came from whoever decided how long a nautical mile is. Jay you are over thinking this. Ron's approach approximates the climb gradient, assuming that the hypoteneuse is appriximately equal to the base of the triangle. This is a good approximation when the angles are small. Which for GA...

Garmin to cease making the 530

But what fails on a GNC-430W or 530W? I think most failures are one of the following (in my guestimated order of likelyhood): 1- Buttons 2- Displays 3- Cable Connections 4- Power Supplies 5- Antennas 999- Digital logic (including the GPS reciever itself) 1 through 5 are supportable by anyone...

My day on the Midway Aircraft Carrier museum.

Almost lost my son on the Midway. He was 2 years old and wandered 1 compartment away. Yelling doesn't help find people on an aircraft carrier. The whole ordeal lasted about 15 seconds.

Midair Collision in Oregon yesterday 10/15/2011

Huh? Most of my flight training (PP and IR) has not been with ATC. And that's within 30nm of a Class B. No requirement to get advisories, and they're not always helpful. I know the FAA always trumpets the "See and Avoid" concept, and the NTSB will likely fault someone for not following it...
