    LLWS can be defeated

OK, this kinda bugs me. While I agree that the book numbers for stall speed may not agree with the airspeed indicator, the ASI is still self consistent. I mean that if you go up, fly to a stall, and check the ASI, then whatever it reads is the indicated stall speed for that aircraft...

    MVR and GPS Database

Don't need a GPS to fly VFR. So definitely don't need a current GPS database to fly VFR. For that matter, you don't need a current GPS database to fly IFR /G either. If the pilot can ensure that the waypoints and approaches to be used are accurate then the pilot can fly IFR with an expired DB.

Vacation ideas for US Virgin Islands

In February I rented a Skyhawk on St Thomas (TIST) and flew around St Thomas and St Johns. It was only 0.9 on the tach. It is so beautiful from the air. We could see the reefs and divers under water.

    Altitude Alerters

The cabin altitude difference from static altitude will most likely be pretty constant. Just build a way to calibrate it in the cockpit. Before the pilot sets the alert altitude just have them set the alerter's altitude to match the altimeters altitude. Unless the plane makes some major...

Colorado Front Range Transponder VFR Certification

I had FRT do my pitot static. In fact when I started calling shops to get it done, they just told me that they call Doug. It was $385 for the full IFR cert. Dunno if he does VFR only jobs too. He will tell you when he's going to be in the area, and you get to meet him that day.

    "you have the controls"

You don't have to use those words, but there should be a clear transfer of control. Otherwise you risk hitting the ground while each of you think the other is flying. This has happened to jet pilots. I recall a story where a plane was tracking down the ILS and neither pilots was flying, and they...

peril of getting off/on aircraft with propeller spinning?

So the insurance company offered the full limit on both policies. $100k each for a total of $200k. How likely is it that she'll be successful arguing that she wasn't a passenger and therefore shouldn't be subject to the per passenger limit? I think it would be pretty unlikely that it would...

New poll - fuel for VFR flight

I set my limit at 1 hour of fuel remaining. I also only fill to the tabs, because that gives me 5 hours endurance. I only have a 2.5 hour bladder. So generally I'm on the ground with 2.5 hours of fuel remaining. In which case I will likely fill back up to tabs.

Pilot’s Erratic Behavior Forces Flight to be Diverted

Increase the hours required for an ATP, now! Think of the children!

    KCRQ Proposed RF Leg

I guess the FAA thinks you would have trouble following the CDI around the radius. I think it would be easier than following a DME arc, since you would just continuously correct to whatever the CDI is saying. Edit: Maybe the problem is that it would not be a standard rate turn. And us...

    5000hp; 6000lbs -Lycoming

Isn't a problem, but must be considered when determining the behavior of the airfoil. You are adding energy to the airflow over the wings (via heat transfer) and that will change how the air flows as compared to a cold wing. Adding that energy can actually cause the flow to separate earlier...

I see 2 splines on the crankshaft. Did it have a gearbox for contra-rotating props? Also, the rocker covers look a liitle odd. Multiple intake and exhaust valves per cylinder or perhaps a hemispeherical cumbustion chamber?

    'Ask the Controller' Thread

I called (by cell phone) Denver Departure for an IFR clearance from a podunk private airporth north of Denver and the controller couldn't give me a clearance time, because she had traffic already in the area. So she asked me to call when ready to depart. I called back when I was holding in...

Owning your own airplane for flight training?

Hee hee. My Dad paid for 40+ hours of my flying. I'd be willing to talk to the FAA about that deal.

Owning your own airplane for flight training?

My airplane costs me approximately $4500 per year if I don't fly it at all!

    Mountain Training

Noted. My point wasn't that they don't have real mountains, but that taking off from sea level and climbing over a 5000' MSL ridge is significantly different than taking off from 5000' MSL and climbing over a 10000' MSL ridge. Both are a total gain of 5000' AGL, but they look very different in a...

    Mountain Training

***Snicker*** Sorry, we Coloradans highly recommend (real) mountain training. Its not the height of the mountain that's the issue. It is the utter lack of performance at high density altitude and the weather that mountains create. There is no way a book will really help you understand...
