Poll: Do you always use electronic navigation on long XC trips?

I love using a WAAS GPS in the mountains. The terrain page is a great way to get a 3rd opinion about whether or not you are going to clear a pass. 1st Eyeballs, 2nd Sectional, 3rd GPS. And yes I've flown over big rocks just like you have in California.

    new battery and w&b

    Yep: AC 2043.13-1B Section 10.1 c. Negligible Weight Change is any change of one pound or less for aircraft whose weight empty is less than 5,000 pounds;

    new battery and w&b

Yes anything under 1 pund is considered negligible. Over 1 pound you update the W&B. I don't understand why your AI would want to think about it. That will take longer than just updating the W&B. When I switched from Gill to Concorde I did the W&B change myself and handed it to the AI...

Cessna 152 to fly ND to Las Vegas

Nah, I got cleared right over the top of PHX while VFR following the published VFR transition. They didn't gripe a bit.

are you "in the system" with flight following?

So I flew a Round Robin IFR flight out of KAPA to do some practice approaches in actual IFR conditions a while back. Flight Aware got the actual flight path right, but really got confused on the filed flight path. I believe I actually flew 3 approaches, but only 2 show up (or I followed the...

Making a white-knuckle passenger more comfy

Go someplace awesome. It only took us 1 trip to Port Aransas, TX to get my kids hooked.

    Camping at small airports?

Pretty much any of the airports in eastern Colorado allow camping. We've camped at Yuma and Fort Morgan. Airport camping is great. Bathrooms with running water (sometimes showers), plenty of flat space for a tent, and you don't have to schlep your gear anywhere. Just toss it out of the...

    Arrow vs 235 comparative costs

We have an 0-540 on the Cherokee 6. We haven't had a cylinder off since the overhaul over 15 years ago (over 700 hours, and all comps > 77). With an O-540 derated to 235hp the thing will run just fine for a long time, so long as it is not abused.

Garmin 1000 altitude is not geoid corrected?

The interface specifcation for GPS users states that the satellite ephemeris is referenced to the WGS 84 ellipsoid model of the Earth. So the resulting altitude calculations are likely actually height above the ellipsoid, not height above MSL.

Why am I out of Night Currency?- Long post

Man, us Colorado types would give our left wing to have a mere 1600' DA. I'm sensing a bit of paranoia. Or a bunch of little things added up to make you uncomfortable. No harm in bagging it when it doesn't feel right.

Lots o' powered lift aircraft, but as Ron points out none have had an FAA airwortiness certificate:

Why the Pathfinder/Dakota is the Best 4-Seat GA Plane

Pfffft. 235hp hardly seems like enough. I find it rather odd that the PA-28-235 and the PA-32-260 both burn 14 gph at 75% power.

    How common are aborted take-offs?

I think the risk tolerance in training has definitely gone down. I believe that aborting for a non-functional pitot-static system is more risky than just flying the pattern once (assuming of course it is VMC). I like getting in a plane with a CFI an gently pushing at the boundaries of my...

    Burning Colorado

We were heading from La Junta back to Denver this morning and heard Tanker 45 talking to Springs Approach. We could see the fire pretty well from about 15nm east of Colorado Springs. The air quality in Colorado is pretty bad right now. We probably only had 25 miles of vis :D.

    Plane for the Mission

Yep, my '66 PA-32-260 had a 1625 lb useful load. I was looking at the Saratoga that Greg K's club has and it only has a 1200 lb useful (granted it is a whole lot faster).

    Plane for the Mission

I have a W&B spreadsheet for a '66 PA-32-260 and I could never figure out how to load it out of CG (using resonably sized humans). Here's a link to the spreadsheet...

    Flying for compensation vs. gift.

What if your co-workers are also pilots. Can one claim that they are required crew members? My company does reimburse for personal aircraft usage, and I have several co-workers who fly. Ahh, the benefits of working in the aerospace industry.

    Helicopter ATC question

Which is silly, since the FARs are very clear that everything is at the pilot's risk. Not to mention the obvious fact that it is the pilot sitting in the machine not the controller. I had never assumed that ATC assumed any of the risk for any action I take in an airplane. I just assumed they...

    Kindle Kneeboard?

You can get Naviator for Android devices. Which similar to (though still not as polished) ForeFlight. I'd actually recommend a full Android 7 inch tablet, instead of the Kindle or Nook Tablet. The Kindle and Nook have no GPS and have Bluetooth disabled. If you get a 7 inch Galaxy Tab you get...
