My 18 y.o. got his Private!

Just wanted to smile out loud! Now, do I trust him enough to let him use the Cessna...:hairraise: or, do I dare think it... the Cherokee:dunno:

    Night landing at unlit field...

This has been a great discussion. I haven't had time to read the forums lately, so I've just now caught this thread, and I thought I had something to contribute. I have a few unlit fields I fly into and out of during dark hours on a routine basis (1-4 times/month). That makes me an...

    Strange IFR Flying Day

Nice write-up, too! Felt like I was there, but without the leans! BTDT, though..

    First River Run!

Jesse, you are right about the skill set involved. I'd add that like all things regarding flying skills, it's better to learn and practice them with altitude (our friend) and then USE'M down low for the things we want to accomplish. It's like another thread when folks were asking what use was...

    First River Run!

Thanks, Ron. Always the voice of reason. It's why we chose the Brazos - it's REALLY wide in some spots! My older son's (he flies) first words were: "How did you not violate the 500 feet rule?". I'm so proud of that boy. Thanks, Bob for the words of advice - we can live by those.

    First River Run!

Wow! I did it! After 3 years and 800 hours, I finally got the courage and confidence to plan a river run - at 30 feet agl! I planned for density altitude, picked a place without power lines or too-sharp-bends-in-the-river, low enough cliffs on one side for a safe out, and a calm wind day so...

Is one current, if one got current illegally?

Heya Spike! Sorry we couldn't put something together with Ken - maybe next time... You know, I've logged 150 hrs since I got my instrument ticket, and 24 of it in actual conditions (including 14 loggable approaches); And I've never done the HILoPT! It's either vectors, or just a procedure...

Is one current, if one got current illegally?

Wow. Thanks, Tony! I coulda swore I learned it as a six-month-look-back (i.e. at the DATE). Cool; Lookit me, bein' all legal-and-current-like! Woohoo!

Is one current, if one got current illegally?

P.S. I'm not worrying about it; it was just something I wondered.

Is one current, if one got current illegally?

Possible scenario: (AHEM) I was getting close to six months on my IR, and I was in solid IMC, so I asked ATC for a hold (all I was missing for currency), so I stay in currency for the next six months... or so I think. My last logged hold was on the IR checkride that I failed, 1/12/07. When...

    Identify MAP by Timing

I don't think a reference exists. I looked. Each of the three good CFII's I've used was okay with my interpolation, since I was flying about 100kt approaches. We never discussed this deeper. The one 'bad' CFII I used was okay with it too, but that's probably a notch in the wrong corner...

    Plane down in Houston

It's okay to be nervous. The vigilance it brings can aid a good pilot. Godspeed tonight, and have fun!

FAA outlaws self-serve fuel? Chicago Executive says so.

Ya know, I can, off the top of my head, count no less than 10 self-serve pumps (at both towered and untowered fields) that have available fuel 24 hrs a day for credit card purchases. And, they have been that way for the 3 years I've known them. This is insanity. Surely the FAA regs aren't...

    Need Pro's/Con's of 'Flapped' landings

Sir Ron, thanks for your replies. I must admit I was grasping for straws when I was coming up with con's; hence they may seem tenuous. Having kids, I know how important it is to be prepared to think like your adversary... I get GREAT Father's Day Cards...!!

    Need Pro's/Con's of 'Flapped' landings

Mark, He's got 27 hrs, 7 of which is solo, and he's fixing to do a cross country solo. I don't think it's just a beginning training thing. He's an adult, and it's really irrelevant if I like his instructors style or not, so I'm not worried about getting over it... I'm just building shelter...
