    Starting IFR training next month

I can't emphasize this enough. If you aren't well trimmed then you'll be fighting with her every step of the way and altitude excursions will be the norm.

Dang X-Plane 10 Sim is just like my instructor...

Same here. I can control the yaw and roll just fine but for some reason the pitch just doesn't work correctly, and I've futzed around with the settings for hours. In the end I just use the A/P and manually steer. On an approach I'll just keep lowering the target altitude on the A/P.

    Why get your IR? Video

I earned my IR this year and it's been nothing less than exhilarating when I'm in IMC. Even after getting my ticket, I was a little apprehensive because all I've been told since I got my PPL years ago was "stay away from clouds". That's now behind me and I enjoy every minute of IMC and approaches.

Best test prep software IR written exam?

I used Gleim and King and also scored 98. I studied for close to a year, just going over the material over and over because I knew that any subject area that I got wrong would result in an extended oral session and I wanted to keep that as short as humanly possible. In the end I still had to...

    Favorite/Most Difficult IAP's?

Thanks for publishing this. This is one approach that I just can't make out. I've watched many Youtube video's as taken from the flightdeck and it had to have been one of the most hairy approaches on the planet. Between the checkerboard as the aiming point and the strong crosswinds over the...

    Procedure Turn Question

I see where my confusion was, I thought it direct to ZACKS from KWANG. Nevertheless, where is the a procedure turn at ZACKS heading inbound?

    Procedure Turn Question

Looking at the first case in the Callback (SBA VOR 25), there was confusion whether a procedure turn at KWANG should have been made. This appears to be a situation I've never been exposed to before because I don't see a procedure turn at KWANG. If approaching from the east along the 250 radial...

    Procedure Turn Question

Can you supply an approach of this type as an example?

    Procedure Turn Question

Wow, I didn't expect so many differing responses. That in and of itself tells me that 50% of the community is confused about the maneuver. Under the circumstances, I would play it say and simply ask the controller for confirmation whether sh/e expects the course reversal. Better safe than sorry.

    Procedure Turn Question

One thing that still has me confused are those situations where you approach the IAF directly head on, in front of you. Taking the RNAV RWY 10 approach into Caldwell, NJ (KCDW), if I'm coming from the west and flying a heading of 96 directly to WOKPU, is executing the procedure turn still...

    707 question

I read somewhere recently that a 707 often required as much as 8000 ft for takeoff. Was that due to it being underpowered or an inefficient wing?

Is this a good setup and execution for this approach? (KDUA VOR/DME RWY35)

I assume you would switch from GPS mode to the VOR receiver after passing HANOM. Right?

    PMA8000BT Question

I'll be a sonofabitch. I was looking in all the wrong places. Thanks for the post!

    PMA8000BT Question

Which is pretty much what I thought, I was just seeking confirmation. Looks like Radio Shack for me - assuming the store is still there.

    PMA8000BT Question

I consider myself a fairly smart guy, but I simply don't see where it says "to mute the radio on the co-pilots position, press..."

    PMA8000BT Question

I had this new audio panel installed recently and simply love it and have one question. I fly often with my wife and she doesn't like to listen to or be interrupted by radio calls when she's listening to music (she connects directly via BT into her Zulu). Right now the solution is for her to...

    VFR into IMC

I'm still in the fascination stage and look for IMC (but not buildups). When planning a trip I'll look where the cloud layers are and file for that altitude. Even with all of my training I was still apprehensive of entering IMC by myself for the first few flights. Now I'm comfortable with it and...

Teardrop Entry - Doesn't Make Sense?

You are 100%. A friend of mine is a controller and I discussed holds with him while I was going through my IR training. He said he could care less how you enter the hold as long as you stay on the projected side and hold your altitude.
