    Garmin 650 pricing

If I understand your situation correctly, you own a never-to-be IFR-legal DA20, you have a dead Garmin150, and are looking to replace it with a GPS suitable for IR training. Budget seems to be an issue. Even if budget is not an issue the cap on the value of a DA20 still argues against a...

    First tailwheel time!

I got my TW endorsement a few years ago at Andover-Aeroflex. It was only about 45mins from home, and I figured the opportunity to fly with Damian DelGaizo was too good to pass up. Haven't flown a tw since, but I'm glad I did it. Flew a CubCrafters Top Cub (Super Cub clone, 180hp) and had a...

Latest from LockMart FSS and their Online Service

I have relied on Foreflight/CSC Duats for my briefings and filings for several years now. I have spent the last hour fooling with Lm AFSS and am underwhelmed, at best. Now, full disclosure, I am using an iPad but in this day and age any software developer who doesn't account for that is pretty...

    Flight Planner /EFB App comparisons

I use FF. love it. ATC routing suggestions are accurate. Chart handling is a bit clunky. Filing and briefing work well. Very satisfied customer.

    Turbo for Little Hills

Don't forget pax. I often climbed to 14-17k in the summer just to avoid the bumps. In an NA piston you have to peddle and peddle and peddle once you get above 6 or 7k. 1000FPM all the way up in the T182T, or better in the Matrix, meant less time listening to wife complaining about the ride...

    Helicopter Solo

.7 in a 300CBi made me crazy for helicopters. Unfortunately it's too expensive ($ and hours of free time) for what would be strictly a vanity rating for me. Sooper dooper fun though, that is for damn sure.

    Identity

It's easy for those of us who are Caucasian. Nobody looks at us and wonders if we were born here. Hence, it's easy to say "Heck, not a prob." For those of Indian, or Japanese, or Phillipino, or Sri Lankan, or wha'evah, that's not necessarily the case. Even 3rd generation non-Caucasians can...

    $14,500 annual!!

That's what I was thinking. And I have to pay for labor! ;) I'm not complaining. My theory is, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

    Maori Sendoff

I'm thinking of teaching my daughter's soccer team a haka. Figure they can perform it before games and intimidate the opposition, just like the All Blacks. Seriously, though, I do love the haka tradition. My family loved everything about NZ.

NA Required medical exam for company health insurance

Nothing illegal. Pretty standard these days. THey figure, if they're taking you on, they ought to at least know what they're getting into and steer you into cost-reducing treatments. It's not like if you show up with carcinoma they will reject you. It's more like, if you're really fat (say...

    I tried, I really tried.

Foreflight on iPad is amazing. No complaints here. I use it on every flight (and I have an Avidyne Entegra system + 2xGTN650s in the panel.) It is so easy to get information out of it - flight planning, arrival planning, clearance copying, blah blah blah. All the FAA pubs in one place...

    Instrument Rating, not needed?

I accept risk every time I hop in the car to drive to the grocery store. I guess this makes me a madman. No wonder I rarely visit POA anymore. Get the IR. It's excellent training and will make you a better pilot, whether you ever fly through a cloud again or not.

    Driver's License, Destination Ideas?

Well, I know I took the test in a '74 VW Super Beetle with the vaunted Semi-Automatic transmission. You shift, no clutch. 3 gears, plus reverse. That was one sloooooooooow set of wheels. On the plus side, it did have a nice AM radio with pushbutton presets. ;) Where did I go after I passed...

Sedona Airport Under Attack - Spread the Word!

I flew in there on a beautiful, late afternoon. The red rocks were glowing, wind calm, the Waco was working the pattern, all was right with the world. One of the greatest locations for an airport, anywhere. Whoever is behind this movement is a jackass. And you can tell him I called him that....

    2012 Formula One Season

DRS and KERS are friggin' gimmicks. I wish they'd get rid of them. Plus I wish someone would put a bullet in the head of Hermann Tilke. That's how I'd fix F1. Not that anyone asked. Love the sport. Watch it religiously. THey're all pampered momma's boys, so I really can't cheer for any of...

    Trivia Rant Thread

I'm not a grammar cop, but screwing up the use of "I" really bugs me. Using "at" improperly, such as "Where is the party at?" also irritates me to no end.
