PPL flying in Europe (specifically Germany)

That sounds like what I recall from when I lived and flew there. If EASA had an equivalent to 61.75, there'd be very little flight training in Europe. Most people would take their families to Florida or California for a US vacation and get their certificates and ratings there. Vacation plus...

Do you regularly run tanks (aux) dry?

If it fails halfway through switching, does it really matter if a tank is dry? All kidding aside: I do believe it is prudent to think about the (unlikely, yes) possibility of a fuel issue from attempted tank switching, and select the time of switching tanks appropriately - such as when in...

All three Las Vegas airports will charge a $3,000 landing fee during F1 races

Man, am I glad I don't live in Las Vegas. Sounds like this problem is much bigger than just airport fees. - Martin

    L3 NGT 9000 Touchscreen Failure

When I first got my NGT-9000+, half of the touchscreen was intermittent. It turned out to be a hardware issue, and the device was replaced under warranty. I would not want to live with an intermittent issue like this. - Martin

    head winds

There has to be a significant amount of wind for this to make a noticeable difference in a piston airplane. As @Hang 4 said, glider pilots adjust their speed based on headwind or tailwind, and also based on the sink rate. But best glide speed in a glider is usually low (compared with airplanes)...

All three Las Vegas airports will charge a $3,000 landing fee during F1 races

Jon, How do you solve the problem of demand so far exceeding available ramp space? Public funding or not, there isn’t enough space to park all the planes who want to fly in for this event. I applaud AOPA’s efforts for making ramp access affordable, but that only works when there’s enough space...

All three Las Vegas airports will charge a $3,000 landing fee during F1 races

Supply and demand. I may not like those prices, but I like do like the self-regulating ways of supply and demand. So I shouldn't cry foul when on occasion this seems to work against me. - Martin

Do you regularly run tanks (aux) dry?

That's a good reminder to work out a fuel strategy for each flight where the switching between tanks occurs while over landable area, ideally in easy gliding distance of a runway. It's a low probability that something like this would happen, but the impact can be severe. - Martin

Do you regularly run tanks (aux) dry?

Knuckleheads or not - accidents do happen because of fuel mismanagement. I am not aware of an accident due to intentionally running a tank dry. - Martin

    MVFR . . .

Meigs had a VOR/DME-A approach before the GPS 36. I don't know when it was created, but I remember using the VOR/DME-A before I was flying planes with IFR GPS.

    MVFR . . .

Yes, but you are doing that for the purpose of landing. Probably a gray area, but I could see it being interpreted as OK with regard to § 91.119.

Do you regularly run tanks (aux) dry?

That's a good way to do it, even in aircraft with simpler fuel systems (e.g. a left and right tank). There are plenty of accidents caused by fuel mismanagement, and if fuel is getting scarce, having a couple of gallons here and a couple of other gallons there really complicates things. In a low...

Garmin G5 Calibration Pitch Shows Nose High Level Flight

George, There is a name for what you want. It's called a flight path vector. When the flight path vector is on the horizon line, the aircraft is in level flight. That's what's shown in the image below; the little circle on the horizon line is the flight path vector. It shows where the aircraft...

    Garmin Avionics & ForeFlight

Exactly. I keep a GDL 52 on top of my glareshield, not just because I can take my Sirius XM subscription with me to other planes that way, but also because this gives me a backup AHRS with my iPad should all the panel-mount avionics fail for some reason.

Practice ILS - need advice G430W

It depends... if it's an electronic HSI, then it will likely get slewed to the appropriate approach course automatically when you activate the approach in the GPS/NAV/COM. If it's a mechanical HSI, then yes, you'll have to set it to the correct course manually either way. - Martin
  18. Martin Pauly

    Swap CDI for HSI?

I agree with @asicer. It's not worth the extra complexity and extra weight of the remote-mounted gyro. Your G5s will give you all you need; one could even argue that keeping a mechanical CDI is overkill. - Martin

Practice ILS - need advice G430W

Yes, it's that easy. The only additional step is to manually set the OBS (if you have a CDI) or course pointer (if you have an HSI) to the final approach course. Trying to intercept the localizer with an course pointer that is not aligned with the final approach course can be "interesting". And...
