    Top Gun 2

You're very right good sir. Someone should be in prison right now (and might even be at the end of their sentence) for the ATFLIR. The fraud, waste and abuse that went into that contract is mind boggling. And 20+ years later, we still carry the absolute worst pod in the inventory (though I did...

The story of Air France Flight 447 (June 1, 2009)

Pretty sure they just did their thing (i.e. pulling full back on the stick) from FL370 until impact several minutes later, never once questioning if those control inputs made any type of sense. I hold my tongue mostly because those of us who live in a glass house, but this and Colgan (or more...

    Top Gun 2

I imagine GCI for the releases themselves, but quite possibly actual inert rounds being carried for filming. Haven't seen the movie yet, but my understanding is that they were carrying Paveway III/GBU-24b/b which is basically a Desert Storm era weapon that we almost never use, but looks pretty...

    Top Gun 2

You're not far from actual truth. There was a TLAM test shot that arrived just a bit to the east, in the Fallon Range Training Complex. I know because I have booped the remains of the nosecone of that missile/whatever it is. It was planned, mind you, but still kind of crazy to think about.

Only thing portable DVD players are used for is IEDs. We all know this

Why do pilots land at the thousand foot markers?

Any Naval Aviator who tells you this is lying :) Ok maybe we don't "try"

US tank killer aircraft for sale

Yeah, not really a "tank killer" by design or by any means. As 3393 said, it was a FAC(A) platform and aerial spotter. Cool bird though, without a doubt, and of course with a significant A/G purpose.

    KHIO Airshow

Ok bud.....I'll admit your response came off differently than it seems you intended

    KHIO Airshow

Good lord dude. Google "use of vintage as a noun". Ironically, you are comparing an aircraft that is still operational, to one that has been removed from active service (a few do continue to fly as red air).

    KHIO Airshow

We're sending a jet down. I passed along my distant memory of bringing another jet there a number of years ago, and being surprised by how close the tall trees were to the threshold. It's a good airshow, I was treated well, especially after my early 1990's vintage fighter broke for a week when I...

    The Cold Blue

I also enjoyed Ed Rasimus' pair of books ("When Thunder Rolled" and "Palace Cobra") in more recent years. Great description of what those guys went through. My generation of fighter pilot has nothing on them, balls of steel.

    The Cold Blue

Yeah I thought this was fantastic. I also liked "Thud Pilots". When I was a kid, we had a copy of "Thud Ridge" in the school library, and I must have read it a dozen times. Also remember watching Memphis Belle a few times.

    [NA] PNW vacation

Another +1 for this. So much cool stuff to do around the Sound.....and the Peninsula and Islands. Have lived on Whidbey Island for over 2 years now, and it is hands down, the most incredible nature I've ever experienced (though I imagine AK has areas that are equal to or wilder). It is hard to...

    BUFF formation takeoff

One time as a fairly junior guy, after a particularly frustrating few attempts at plugging the -135 basket, I asked the boom to "just hold it steady".....it seemed as if we were getting in a PIO with him trying to help me out, etc. I quickly learned that when they aren't trying to help, it is a...

    BUFF formation takeoff

haha I knew it! Don't forget, keep pointing at your chicks until they have to accept a merge with you :)

    BUFF formation takeoff

Threat ring is a colloquial term to describe a single S/A site, or more specifically the radius around the site that corresponds to f-pole range....similar to what we would now call a "WEZ" or weapon engagement zone (though semantically, that would refer to a max engagement range, rather than...

    BUFF formation takeoff

It is interesting how the 3-ship seems to be the standard BUFF formation. Not a 2 ship or 4 ship......there must be a reason

Where are the reserve parking spots for grumpy old white guys?

The Teet is a pretty decent grocery store on the east coast.....something akin to Publix in the south/FL oh wait, you meant that word///:p

Thought that was a funny quote. Literally the antithesis of the actual TOPGUN course.
