How many here have read these books. See attached poll?

These I'm pretty sure I've read every word of at some point over the years!

How many here have read these books. See attached poll?

These are "reference books". Like an encyclopedia or the dictionary. They're not intended to be read cover to cover. In fact, although I am well versed on most of them and refer to them all the time, I can't say I've "read them" any more than I've "read" the dictionary. I can't think of many...

    GPS backup

To be fair, the equipment shack in that picture almost certainly contains more than just that for the DME.

    Which Government Agencies hire pilots?

Are there? I was only aware of 2181, which is actually "Aircraft Operations". Certainly there are other job series where a pilot could fill, but they're not actual flying jobs, are they? I am happy to be proven wrong, but I don't see any that stand out when looking at the list of job series...

    How to approach CFII/MEL/MEI

Having an MEI opens up a WHOLE lot of doors, though. At least it did for me. Whether that helps you build you multi time or provides you a fallback during the next hiring slowdown/furloughs, I think it's 100% worth it.

    How to approach CFII/MEL/MEI

For "immediate" cost efficiency, then yes, do your CFII in a single and go on from there. But if you're also trying to maximize your multi time (for a job, for example), then there is an argument to do it all in the twin. Yes, it will cost more to get all your ratings, but probably not more...

    ...

    1. What did your CFI say? 1a. Why is it even a problem getting a new endorsement? If I've signed someone off for a checkride, I sure must be comfortable enough to sign them off for solo. 2. Why not just call the DPE and ask?

What is the difference between a PT and a HILPT?

Sure it does, if you load an ILS (for example) with a PT.

    Holds

This procedure is really early in the TAA-to-ILS development - Amdt 3 is from 2013, which is very early days for all of that. The current Amdt 3A just had some minor airport elevation-type changes. So in 2013, the rules for RNAV-to-ILS transitions were new and not fully fleshed out. So it has...

    Which Government Agencies hire pilots?

The FAA for one. As mentioned, usajobs.gov is the source for all (most?) federal hiring. The job series for pilot (useful for searches) is 2181.

Airport Courtesy Cars, Last Update 4 years ago!

The website is very clearly and obviously a user-input supported listing. Crowd-sourced. How do you think the information gets on there? Do you expect that the owner (of a free website) has a team of employees that spends all day contacting FBOs and airport managers weekly to get the latest...

Cessna 172 and PA-28-140 - over the dash visibility on the ground

Why would you want to know the visibility WITHOUT the seat adjusted? That's a basic cockpit setup task, adjusting the seat, that you should do every time you get in the airplane. The view with the seat in the all-the-way down position is irrelevant.

What is the difference between a PT and a HILPT?

PTs have never* been permitted on GPS approaches. * "Never" being the extent of my knowledge, which in this case is the criteria that went into effect in 1995 (FAAO 8260.38A) That's pretty much the beginning of GPS approaches, so I don't think saying "never" is too presumptuous. The first set...

Airport Courtesy Cars, Last Update 4 years ago!

You really do have an axe to grind about a free website, don't you? Is there some personal animosity toward @retpd2001 or what?

What is the difference between a PT and a HILPT?

Well I disagree with IFR Magazine's opinion. In either case you can get turned around pretty much however you want. And to me, the standardized entries of a holding pattern are easier and require fewer turns than a PT anyway. Also, there is no "protected side". Both sides are protected. The...

I don't know where you're hearing that. It's certainly not something I have ever thought or taught.

    Fan Marker... How to fly?

If you click on the "Navigation Use" tab, you will see that none of the boxes are checked. I assume this means it isn't actually used on anything. And indeed, I don't see it on any enroute charts OR approach charts. So I question whether it's actually there any more, and perhaps the database...

    Fan Marker... How to fly?

I used to have access to historical copies of the AIM (actual paper versions), and I looked this up maybe 15 years ago. The references to various types of markers were removed in about 1995-1997 as I recall. So if you find an AIM from that time period or earlier, you can read about them. They...
