    Fuel straining in larger aircraft

Thank you guys! Very informative. Another question has since come about; why aren't big avgas airplanes sumped? At my job we have an aviation museum which has a DC-3, B-17, PBY Catalina, etc and I have never seen them once sump the tanks. We've also gotten things like a DC-7 and a TBM Avenger...

Flying an non-IFR certified aircraft legally in IMC?

As 35 AoA mentioned it is done, it isn't dangerous, it isn't difficult. I have experienced this and can attest to it. However only in the military world. The question seems to be is there legal exception to allow for such operation. This answer seems to be no.

    Fuel straining in larger aircraft

I’ve been noticing that non of the pilots that fly larger airplanes (such as TBM850) never strain their fuel. Any idea why not? We do it all the time in GA aircraft in order to inspect fuel contamination, logically I can’t think of a reason why the fuel in a larger aircraft can not get...

Need a Flying partner to smash through hours

Of course they can. FlyingColo, I'm based at KFRG. I manage a fleet of PA-28's which are in my opinion well maintained - 50 hr, 100 hr, and all other maintenance done on time and without skimping on the monies. They're at $119/hr and $128/hr wet for the Warrior/Archer respectively. As for...

Need a Flying partner to smash through hours

Welcome to POA, I'm in a similar situation as you, I'm based out of Long Island and I manage a small fleet. I plan on doing quite a lot of flying in the near future, we might be able to arrange something. Where are you currently based? What types of aircraft do you normally fly?

Keying the mic in response to ATC

Chapter 4 - Section 2. Radio Communications Phraseology and Techniques: http://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/aim/aim0402.html#aim0402.html.1 List plenty of other languages persay that we are to use. Perhaps these things aren't written out clearly in the FAR's but they go...

    Roger, Wilco

From my experience it is quite common in the airspace. I think the Brits used it a lot and now some of the local guys are. But if you hear a SpeedBird on the frequency then you're very likely to hear Wilco shortly after.

Keying the mic in response to ATC

I key the mic. Picked it up from a few instructors. For an airspace as busy as it is in the North East I think it is efficient. I would have to disagree with those of you who say it is useless. As a previous post mentioned this thread is proof of the fact that it is a effective form of...

    glides like a safe

I was gonna list the Bell 407 thinking I'd school everyone but I bow down to you sir! In all seriousness, the Arrow flies fine in my opinion. I flew the plane a few times during my private training and I never had anything but a smooth landing it it. I have like ~10 hrs in it. I...

    Pipistrel Panthera

Airplanes like these make me really happy. The biggest problem I have with general aviation is that GA planes are often very inefficient in fuel usage. I have been looking into greener airplanes. The Panthera is one of them for sure. Along with the SkySpark and SunSeeker.

    My Bad

This happens at FRG every fews months. Actually last fall some guy took off around 10:40 when tower was still open without talking to tower. He said he was announcing on CTAF but didn't here tower. For those of you who don't know CTAF and TWR are on the same frequency at FRG. I think this dude...

Can a girl handle a line services position?

I would argue that Line Service/Refuelers are exposed to a lot more "cancerous" fumes than many of the posts here seem to let on. I've been fueling airplane for nearly three years now and I am convinced that the Line Service position has negative health effects. Yes you are "exposed" to these...

horizontal visibility into an obscuration, and ice

Definitely depends. Couple of weeks ago I flew KFRG-KMHT VFR. I had rain and snow for more than 50% of the flight in VMC, temperature was below freezing, and I got almost no ice accumulation. I think it is a good idea to go up with an reputable pilot/instructor who has a significant amount of...

    Long Cross Country Flight Planning

My only advice would be to take someone with you. Especially someone who can help with flight duties. Perhaps a friend that has a private certificate or such. While it will be a great learning experience for you I think the one thing you don't seem to have redundancy for is yourself. I...

    Gulfstream Girl

Working at the airport I have met her. However I did not know her "story" until now. That being said I can not make much of a judgment. Don't know her well. Only spent a brief time with her and have seen her around the airport on other occasions going out on intro flights and such. Seems...

    Brothers and Flying

If only I could convince one of my brothers to come flying with me. Be a pilot for a little over a year now and neither of them has come flying.

    iPhone Pulse Oximeter

The only thing this watch is lacking is a pulse oximeter. Otherwise it would be absolutely perfect for a pilot. May consider getting this once it becomes available. More and more things for my iPad to do.

NorthEast POA lunch meet up: Sunday, Feb 17th

Sweet, perhaps this time we can be true aviators and set two dates like both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is our primary system, Sunday or redundant fail-safe. If the wx goes to crap on one we have the other.
