the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

I knew we had frozen rain and sleet last night but damn is it icy! I would not want to experience what it's like to land a plane on this!

Landed on ice many times in Alaska and it is not as bad as you imagine. Just land at the same crab angle as you hold on final, assuming there is a cross wind, slide on the ice and use power an rudder to stay on the runway.

To stop just spin the plane backwards and add power. (ok, kidding on that one) But one time I did accidentally ground loop a Navajo on the ice and I fire walled the throttles to stop.

Ah yes, an oldie but goodie...

Would not want to be landing a plane in the chicagoland area right now.
I say that after almost having a hilarious, slow motion crash in my own driveway this AM. Lost all traction at <5mph, couldn't brake or turn, and just started spinning and sliding.

We actually had a trip this AM. I flew DPA-MDW leg. Ramp and taxiways were insanely slick at DPA. Flipping into beta was enough to unstick the main gears, used nose wheel to counter the drift and keep the plane straight. Normal time to taxi to runway is 3-4 minutes, today it took 12 minutes.

That checks out! I got a text from my A&P this morning who told me to skip taxiing the plane over because their ramp was solid ice and he'd already fallen down once!
Hope the runways were better :)

it's going down to 55* here overnight and only up to 71 tomorrow

I don't want to brag or anything, but last night after dinner I cooked a pound of bacon. I'm going to do it again this morning for breakfast.

Also, I did not hit bird on final.

is it weird that I have never seen this before?

Has to be a typo, i and o next to each other on the keyboard. They meant OVC012.

IVC doesn’t exist AFAIK.

Curious. I assumed these were autogenerated. Otherwise it seems there would be a lot more typos. I agree that that's the only logical explanation though.

I asked AI and at first it said it stands for "instrument visual conditions" and I said are you sure? it came back with "it would appear my initial response was incorrect, and this is non-standard code" and is probably a mistake. kinda cool, actually, unless you believe it's first response. but good to see it figure it out.

Ask AI if it's a super sure this time. If it gives a third response, shoot it.

I love it when my pilot friends have questions for me when somethings happens ATC related
while flying into and out of other airports.

I wasn’t there.
I can only speculate.

But still I try

Must be really interesting in the Bentonville AR area right now. Per the METARs, look north and there's a heavy snow storm and freezing fog, look south and you have rain and thunderstorms.

My buddy sent me this.....right after the .75 amu vernier constant speed control decided to retire during run up after what appears to be 58 years of service.... forcing me to drive 20 hours to Tennessee then Florida.

I noticed this on my mains after landing today. Is this just the fairing over the landing gear cracking? There is no damage necessarily to the landing gear from this right ?

Peel it back and look. It's no good anyway, so you can't hurt it.

Anyone else getting hit up by airplane brokers recently?
I've been hit 3x in as many days, and that's definitely a first. Haven't responded to any of 'em but wondering if they're in a bit of a lull for buying/selling. Anyone else?

Must frequent POA and know you might be relocating

I've been getting mailers every month or two since I bought the damn thing.

I can't remember the last time I got a mailer.
But emails and phone calls are another story.

That would actually be impressive intelligence gathering on their behalf...

Yesterday I flew on N777UA, United's first delivered 777. It will turn 30 in a few months. It is serial number 7.
Was it flight 77 departing from gate G7 with an ETE of 7 hours and 7 minutes and welcoming you to your destination where the local time is now 7 o'clock?

Why don't people take video in landscape mode?

A different question is why post crappy video is you didn't use landscape mode?

That's one (two) of my gripes for today...
