We’ll be flying if I find another plane, otherwise driving, and staying with relatives a couple miles away.
I've been lucky enough to be able to fly every year, either in my plane or someone else's. A friend of mine who drives to OSH, leaving from the same town I do, asked me how much it costs me, so I did the math. I live near Austin, Texas.

Driving (Google Maps) (Round Trip)
2486 Miles / 16 MPG = 155 Gallons * $2.65/Gallon = $411
39.5 Hours

Flying (Round Trip)
13 Hours * 13 GPH = 169 Gallons * $5.00/Gallon = $845
1816 Miles

Of course these are rough numbers and assume no delays, but roughly I spend over $400 more to fly, but save 26 Hours. I was surprised that I save 670 miles and this is not straight-line, but using actual airports I stop at. The time savings alone is worth the extra money.

I’d like to take the RV there, do you just show up or is there a reservation system?
We stay in a rented RV (the travel trailer kind) in a private campground (Sleepy Hollow) which is why we have to pay a deposit. If you camp in Scholler there’s no deposit but you can prebuy your camping credentials or pay when you arrive but the sites themselves are first come first serve with the choice spots going the first day Scholler opens on or about June 30th. If you aircraft camp you just show up (monitor the campground status beforehand to see if they are accepting campers— volume and/ground conditions dictate this) and pay for camping when you register— no prebuy option like in Scholler.

We had a fun road trip. I really like driving (except around Chicago, that sucked) anyway, so either one is good.

Two years ago we flew commercial. If we’d have taken the RV-8, we’d have gotten there an hour sooner for the same or less cost, and we wouldn’t have gotten covid and missed all but the first two days.

Planning on driving there this year. I’d fly, but I want to order some long pieces of spruce and sheets of plywood to pick up from ACS and it wouldn’t fit in the RV-12.

Planning on flying up from Central Texas again this year and join up with the Cessna’s to Oshkosh for the mass arrival/camping in the N. 40

Thinking of flying there commercially, but don't know:
- which days are best (plan to stay 3 full days)
- where to stay and how to transport myself from there

If you only have 3 days, Tue, Wed, Thur would likely get you the most bang for your buck. Night Airshow is a must.
Ubers are plentiful and you can stay in Appleton or Neenah in an Airbnb. Camping onsite is cool but it can be a little "Woodstock" sometimes.

I've been several times. The first time I stayed in a hotel about 40 minutes south. It was nice, but expensive and inconvenient. We flew in with a friend and our respective wives. We didn't land at KOSH, but at a smaller airport north of Milwaukee. The next year I flew commercial and stayed at the university. I channeled my flat broke college years and microwaved dinners in the dorm room. I rented a car, and that was a story. In a moment of uncharacteristic foresight, I documented every paint chip and wheel scrape on the car, including the deep stains on all four seats. Month later, they sent be a bill for about $200 for interior cleaning. I sent them the pix and said take THIS! The next year I flew in with a group of friends, took the shuttle to and from the show, and ate at the dining hall with friends. There is no easier and more convenient way to see Oshkosh than that.

Be there Tuesday thru Thursday. Afternoons hanging out at the Seaplane Pilots Association peddling merch. NO Discounts to you cheap as***. Staying at the Dorms as usual.

Never too soon! I start thinking about Oshkosh about the moment my wheels leave the pavement on the field (even though that's usually on the ground these days). We are past the winter solstice of aviation, OSH25 is closer than OSH24 so I'm getting excited. This will be my 21st overall, 20th in a row, and 19th in a row being on the field for the whole week.

Huh? That sounds like a slight. Santa Claus would not be pleased.

But seriously, wondering what you mean by that comment? I'm not old enough to have been to Woodstock.

Well if it rains you will understand the Woodstock reference. The campground turns into a giant mud pit when there is significant rain.

My way is easier and more convenient!! When I wake up, I'm already there. No shuttles!

This is what happens when your friends know you're turning 50 at Oshkosh...

I plan on going but this will likely be my last Oshkosh trip.

(I’m getting to the point that I just don’t fly enough to justify the aircraft)

I always when EAA fires me, I'll come back for one more year and just enjoy myself. My girlfriend laughs and says I'd be miserable. She's probably right.

I've never attended, but maybe this year will be my first. I'm one state away, fly a homebuilt, and don't mind camping in a tent. I think I can wait until the 11th hour to commit.

I only worked one show, and I didn't have the seat that you do, but I definitely strongly prefer not working.

If you're only a state away, it would be crazy to not check it out. It's definitely not for everyone. But it sure is home for a lot of people!

I'm planning an epic summer in my Maule. It'll start by flying from just north of Seattle to Maryland to see some of my kids and grandkids. On the way home I'll stop at AirVenture to get a full dose of aviation chatter. Then some airplane camping in the wildernesses of Montana and Idaho before putting my plane back in its hangar. It will be stupidly expensive, but almost everything about GA is. That's what I signed up for 47 years ago and still don't have any regrets. It'll only be my 7th trip to KOSH, and my 5th time flying myself in. I've camped under my wing, or in Camp Scholler each time.
