FFS. I need a new hobby.

but really what we all want to know... does the 172 perform better with the 540 in it?

It does not. Had a heckuva bounce when I landed at champaign, probably because that's the first time i ever flew it near max gross/aft cg. But because it's a skyhawk, I put a little power in and still made the first turnoff.

Skyhawks! Always coming through FTW!

Just curious, is this an 5 year AOG situation???

Short answer, yes. It hasn’t flown since 2019, mainly because of parts and machining issues with the engine. The engine is sorted out now but I’m still finishing the discrepancy list from the annual inspection.

Sigh.

Divco built the wrong case. I can't make this **** up. They were doing final inspection and figured out they rebuilt a case for the smaller diameter crankshaft.

Somehow, magically, they have another case that's the one I need and ready to go, but it's already painted lycoming gray. They can send it as is or strip and re-alodine it. If i want it as is, they can ship it.... tomorrow. Again, I can't make make this **** up.

I'm at a loss as to what's going on in Tulsa.

Wow! Once again, that sucks! Guessing the case they built for you is going to be offered to another customer that has been waiting and expecting a case in Lycoming gray...

Take it and run....

Somehow, magically,
and you believe that?...

You got net neutrality 'metered', plain and simple. Fact is nobody got anywhere in this life by asking nicely; this is further illustration of being in a position of capture.

They just don't treat their big book customers (the name brand engine o/h shops in your case) they way they did you. Which again, drives home my point the rec side of this thing is cooked, if regulatory relief and/or market diversification into automotive alternatives isn't/aren't forthcoming.

Rattle can, team green, boom, done.

Not even for a second.

I can't figure out what's going on though. My best guess (hope) is that they actually did eff up as described, and they grabbed a finished unit out of another order to get me out of their hair? So now some other poor sucker gets to wait another three months?

Or they had this sitting on a shelf somewhere for 10 years because somebody rejected it?

I dont feel great about it. On the one hand, if they issue an 8130 for it....otoh where did this thing come from?

Personal recent experience is that volume shops which are good customers get cuts at the front of the line. My engine needed half of a crankcase remachined for a mag bearing (6 cylinder lycoming). It was done by Crankcase Services in under 2 weeks because of the relationship the shop has with Crankcase Services.

Somehow, magically, they have another case that's the one I need and ready to go,.....

Like the Ship of Theseus, how many parts can be replaced and the work still considered an overhaul? If someone replaces the case, the crankshaft, the camshaft, all the cylinders, all the bearings, the fuel pump, and the oil pump, is it still an OH or has it become a new engine?

My experience with divco was similar. Case needed a boss welded up. They welded and shipped it. Only they didn't do final machining. Only found after a&p struggled trying to get the case back together.

They did turn it around fairly quickly after that.

Other than Divco your options are limited.

Neither. It’s an old, runout engine with expensive new parts.

Much like a ww2 fighter, the dataplate is all that matters.

One thing I've learned that I didn't know is that the crankshaft is the least replaceable part.

I can run over there and give them a stern talking-to, but that may push out the receipt of your crankcase into never.

Jim, wanna go to Tulsa next January and watch the chili bowl midget nationals? Maybe we can pick up your case then.

Oh well. Water under the bridge now.
Maybe it all led to you having a badass RV in the near future. (after you finish mine of course)

Also just fyi..talking about your crank, weight in grams, and saying 'I don't know what's going on' all in the same public thread is not advisable. ;)
Although it seems Tulsa are the ones on drugs lol.

It’s painted and on the shelf. Do they need a box, foam peanuts and a few stamps?

Yeah... That seems like a lot of effort.

Actually I suspect they need to fix whatever the last customer sent it back for real quick.

I think I posted about it upthread, but I had to send back the accessory case they sent me. They turned that around in two days iirc. I wish I had stamped it somewhere to see if it was actually the same part. I can't believe they could weld, machine, and alodine it that fast.
