So Tik Tok is being banned. I know it might be up in the air and things could change. Don't want to get into a is Tik Tok good or bad kerfuffel. So I'm posting this in Technical Corner. If it's banned, how does that work? Is there somewhere a switch can thrown and it simply disappears from the Internet? Does it just become illegal to use it and if you get caught you'll be arrested? Is Tik Tok ordered to shut it down? What if they don't? Will the boss at Tik Tok get arrested?

It will still work for now. New downloads will not be possible, nor will updates. With the lack of updates, it'll eventually grind down to a halt.

How does that work? Downloads and updates not being possible. Wouldn’t that require Tik Tok doing it voluntarily?

No. The US app stores just stop hosting the app. You know, like how China or any other country seeking to control what their citizens can access.

Ok. So the app stores do it. What if they don’t. What I’m wondering is if there is some way the FBI, CIA and other such agencies can just take it off the air. Like jamming or something

There isn't anything I have seen this far on Tik-Tok that would urge me to make kte extra clicks this would require...YMMV.

I think that, if the law is enforced, the app stores (or whoever within the USA supplies it) gets a hefty fine.

The companies could pay up to $5,000 for each user who continues to access TikTok, meaning penalties could total to a large sum.

My understanding is that the government won't shut down the servers although the USA subsidiary might, hence the reports about it "going dark".
People can still get the app from other countries via VPN. Apparently, the law allows the president to delay the shutdown by 90 days.

On a related note, I got censored by the Chinese Communist Party :happydance:
I was looking at a conversation to a friend and noticed one of the pictures I shared in a DM was "expired". I racked my brain and finally remembered what it was! I shared a picture of a Disney vending machine in a Beijing hotel containing a Winnie the Pooh stuffed doll, with the comment that I didn't think he was allowed to be sold here. I checked another friend's DM and saw the picture was "expired" there, too. The text was removed specifically about the picture- I've no idea why they couldn't remove the space for the picture- maybe it was left as a warning? The replies were something along the line that the doll was OK, and we all dropped the subject.

For background- Winnie the Pooh is a dog whistle that was used to discuss Xi Jinping:

My WeChat still works, so I didn't completely PO the government there.

I have a VPN called SurfShack that lets me put myself in any number of countries.
Does this or any other VPN work for TikToc this morning? I don’t have a VPN or TikTok, but find the entire internet “control” thing fascinating from an electron standpoint.

Just tested it. My VPN very nicely still allows tiktok to be accessed.

HA!!!! Its back online already. When you open it there is pop-up message thanking him for saving it.

Lest we forget, Trump wanted to shut it down back in 2020 and started this whole thing.

Feels like a stunt or maybe some quid pro quo but whatevs. It was the most predictable thing in the world.
He will want to ban it again once tomorrow's crowd size videos start making the TT rounds.

I've never had a Tick Tok, or an Instagram. Or what was that thing before X? Instagram? I forget.
