Body found in wheel well on United flight from Chicago to Maui

If you have been on a U.S. carrier flight in and out of Cuba you will most likely not only have mechanics but 4-5 people responsible for security and clearing the plane prior to departure…there are some places checks are routine.

Not sure what FAA requirement requires an airline pilot to do a walkaround and to what extent is required other than to make sure the aircraft is airworthy. Just how many pilots would look for someone in the wheel well as part of their walkaround. As a passenger waiting to board an airliner watching the plane come in old crew gets off new crew gets on, I can't remember that I ever saw a pilot out their walking around the plane.
There’s a pilot doing the walk around prior to every flight. You just haven’t noticed.

Until 2 years ago. One major airline only required a walk around on the first flight of the day or on a crew change. They trained the ground crew to do a walk around. After a crew change one day the first officer comes back from walk around and doesn't say anything is wrong. 5 minutes later a damper comes up an says we had a hydraulic leak. Don't know which is better.

Another time another airline, contract ramper comes up and says something looks odd on right main gear. I go look and maintenance had put on wrong size tire. It was an approved tire but all 4 main tires had be either one size or the other. With an empty plane you couldn't tell anything wrong, but with 160 pax and 40,000 lbs of fuel it look like one was low on air.

Sadly, some people are only barely smart enough to survive in their own environment, and don't realize it. Not any less smart than a guy from the US going on a safari and getting out of the car to pet the lion. Have seen the video, does not work out well, would rather freeze in the wheel well.

The term coined for those that attempt to pet bison, bears, and other wildlife is "touron."

It fits.

Well now I'm seeing reporting that the body was found in Maui.

So the ETOPS inspection missed it or it originated in ORD. Either way pretty bad.

Never worked on the 787, certainly havent done an ETOPs departure on one.

Typical walk around inspections made throughout the operational day would do little to detect a stowaway that had a chance to hide in the non-pax or cargo areas. If there is no reason to open those gear doors then there’s nothing to see.

While Rio to Chicano wouldn't have been in ETOPS land, going form ORD to OCG certainly would be.
They may still do an ETOPS check to Rio even though it’s not ETOPS. At Delta we do an ETOPS check down to São Paulo, Rio and Buenos Aires (maybe even Santiago and Lima but I’ve never been) even though it’s not required

IIRC, not long ago the National Park Service was asking "tourons" not to pet the bears in Yellowstone.

Yellowstone, Jellystone, just bring a pic-a-nic basket.

It's an even bigger problem with the bison in the park. Idiots think they're just funny-looking cows and try to pet them. The fools get gored and tossed rather often.

I believe some guy whose last name started with “D” had a theory about this type of thing…

Maybe it was a former special operations guy who was being kidnapped for some island nation’s revolution, and tried to escape through the baggage compartment into the wheel well.

Yeah, but he had sense enough to jump off the wheel into a rather conveniently located body of water before the plane got too high.

Sad that it happened, but for the average non-aviation person, this might sound legit:
