Thinking of upgrading from my 182

So, most common scenario is wife and I with week/weekend bags. But, I'd like the option for 4 for short $100 hamburgers. figure 800 pounds plus 2.5h of fuel as a worst case. I think this puts it somewhere around 1000-1100 pounds of useful for a 5% use case type of flight. With the exception of some late model M20J and the M20k models this looks pretty doable. If I did an M20k this would just restrict my ability to take all 4 of us on flights. This is rare if I'm being honest with myself.
FWIW, My Ovation's useful load is 1,059 pounds and works well for the sorts of missions you're talking about.
Mooneys should be discarded entirely for comfort reasons at 2+ bills.
This is only true if you're significantly below average height. I'm 6'4" 325# and the Mooney is one of the most comfortable singles I've ever flown.
It's a 1963 182F. I think 130 is pretty on target without wheel pants for the older planes. That's 130 knots true. I think the newer 182s are a bit cleaner and true a bit faster. Maybe I'm wrong?
Nope, that sounds pretty much right on. I have about 500 hours in a 1971 182N and it was about 130 without the pants and 135 with. Maybe 3 knots faster on a good day. OTOH, a brand new 182 with G1000 and not so much in the way of dirt or dents can easily do 140+.

Yeah, but the OP's budget has been stated as $200K or less, which is already a jump from the $150K he was originally targeting. Even a 90s-era Ovation in decent shape is going to be well beyond that.

Lol it would seem so. Over on Controller, pretty much every 90s-early aughts Ovation is listed in the mid-high 200s. Obviously ask and sell price are two different things, but they won't be 20-30% apart. There is one from 1994 at $182K, but that thing still has basically a 1994 panel and interior. By the time the new owner is done updating it, they'll be at $250-300K.

Looking at the rest of what's on Controller, mine's probably worth 20% more than I have it insured for... And I just updated hull value either last year or the year before! :eek:

That sounds about right. My Turbo Arrow appears to be up 10% from my purchase price, and I bought it just under a year ago.

Maybe the OP's plane is worth more than he thinks.

Considering purchase price plus two major avionics upgrades, we've had ours for 10+ years now and it's worth 50% more than we've got in it!

This tells me that the smart thing to do with my money is to buy more airplanes. :D :D :D

Lol but how much less is the dollar worth compared to when you bought the plane? ;) A couple months ago, I sold a five-year-old boat trailer that I bought new. I sold it for the exact price I paid for it brand new. I thought that was pretty cool until my wife had to ruin it for me by saying, "how much more do you make now than you did five years ago?" ~35%. "How much more are our houses worth?" ~50%. "How much more does it cost to go out to eat?" ~40%. "So then, dear, it sounds like you sold it for around 40% less than you paid for it."

Point being, your argument unfortunately will not fly in my house, literally or figuratively.

I couldn’t afford to buy the house today that we bought six years ago.

If I sold it today I’d make a lot of profit, but not enough to buy a similar house.

For airplanes its worse in a way because of the additional money spent on maintenance, repairs, avionics what not, etc.

Yeah - the misc things like the engine, avionics, electrical system, etc. can just be assumed to be OK.

Those things are super cheap and quick to take care of afterwards anyway.

We are selling some property and have a farm tractor to sell with it or separately. We’ve been offered almost 20% more than we paid for it in 2018, but it appears the new ones are about double what we paid!
 
Honestly I’d love a cirrus but this seems like a whole new level of cost and I’m not getting anywhere near an sr22 at even 200k.
You can get an SR20 for that price though.

Yes, the 22 is better in some categories, but the 20 does just fine, even in Arizona/Nevada. Plan on a 500 fpm climb versus 1,000 fpm of the 22. Also, cruise is 145 KTAS versus 175 for the 22. But the SR20 burns 16 GPH in climb versus 30 GPH and only 8.8 GPH in cruise versus the 13.5 GPH in the 22. The SR20 has an 850-lb useful load compared to 1,000 lb in the older SR22s.

You can buy a nice SR20 G2 for $200,000, whereas a similar SR22 will cost at least $100,000 more. Insurance is $2,400 for a $200,000 hull and zero time in type when purchased.
