Starting to see this on a few aircraft, what’s the purpose ?

Well it would have little use on a 172 (IMO).

But on large aircraft or on aircraft that are in a rush to kill you....the master caution will tell you...
Your cabin pressure loss exceeds normal rate
You have a oil gearbox temp approaching redline
You have marginal oil pressure in the #2 hydraulic
and on it goes.

Many experimentals have EFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument Systems) installed that will give a host of warnings for engine & flight conditions that are out of range (parameters are user settable). Some of the big money GA are now carrying autoland systems and other safey options. Technology is sneaking up on GA albeit slowly ...

The CGR30p is a popular choice of engine monitors and as the diagram says, it's included at no charge. I believe it's also required if the instrument is outside a certain range of view.

I have an MVP50 with the red and yellow lights. It's a "hey, look at the dang display" heads up. Once you do, you note something flagged like the alternator has dropped off line or whatever.
