They're missing a key aspect, though: Flying *in* the mountains and landing at high altitude backcountry strips, which to me was really the highlight.
(3U2 if you're looking... Lots of great USFS strips in the area too.)

As I understand it, CPA is more about flying *around* the mountains.

Which, I must admit, is also fun. Once you understand what's going on around the mountains and how to make use of it, you can do fun tricks like this: (Yes, normally aspirated)

Their ground covers everything, but unless you bring your own plane or have hours in their rentals, they’ll avoid the shorter high elevation strips. We definitely did pass/ridge crossings at 500 AGL and briefed emergencies and turn backs. It’s not all in but a really good primer for this sort of work.

You're descending so fast it looks like a climb???

Naah, that's pegged on the +2000 side. Too bad I didn't have my GI275 yet or I'd be able to look at the logs to see what the actual climb rate was. Probably not much more than that, but it's always fun to ride the ridge lift.

Just booked mine.
I asked about remaining availability and they said they still have 2 cottage style places left (~160$), a couple standard rooms (~120$), and then just 2 BRs.

Booked the 2 bedroom. Sept 26-29. What dates are everyone doing?

While we were out for expenses related to the house, we are out doubly as April's uncle was diagnosed Stage IV Hepatic this week and given a survival time frame of not that long. So that weekend we are going to Muscle Shoals/Florence to see him along with additional family coming in from NC and AR.

Wait, I thought you and @Sac Arrow were the same person. Now you are me as well? :)

Actually it's shaping up that we're likely to be able to go, so we'll take it. I don't remember... Do they take a deposit? Maybe pm me and we'll figure out what we need to do.

Huh? What? Who? Oh, right. Yeah, we will most def prolly be there.

22 days to gooooo.

Y’all want to do one of those food and beverage signup sheets?

Oh, I’ve got one that Bryan never locked down that we’ve been reusing.

We're still planning on it. **** keeps breaking around here faster than I can fix it though, so who knows. I was going to update the spreadsheet, but apparently my android tablet doesn't have Google sheets? I don't have the energy to deal with that right now.

I think @SixPapaCharlie & @N4984R are also planning to be there.

Did you try your iPad?

I’m planning to be there. Most likely it will either be just me or possibly my son too

We won't be able to make it this year. Monica has a conference in DC next week, and she's "allowing" me to fly her there. I'm looking forward to meeting another POA'er while I'm there, and I'll invite him to attend Gaston's next year.

We booked a 2 bedroom, arriving Thursday, leaving Sunday after brekky. Added our names and the pups to the list. Our friends who joined RR this year are planning to join us as well.

Our friends who joined RR are making logistical plans, anyone from the Chicago or nearby area want to fly 2 pax on Friday? (Guessing no more than 300lbs of useful load)

If someone found themselves free at the last minute and wanted to check it out is everything booked up?

6 Days.
Do we have a food plan? The spreadsheet suggests barely.
Last year I recall Chef Dana grilling various meats.
I will plan on bringing various meats.

Also, we doing a Trigger Gap run? That was cool last year.

Plans? We don’t need no steenkin plans! Kidding a bit - usually we end up with way too much food if there is no planning. But 16 or so people shouldn’t take too much coordination and would be a pain at the restaurant. Some snacks, some vegs, beer, lots of beer. Condiments. Charcoal. Chimney.

If you and others bring some meats, I can grill Saturday night.

@kaiser and I booked a big cabin so we can do the party cabin hosting thing.

I plan to call Thursday to check the field conditions, but does anyone know off the top of their head how well the runway drains off?

Keep your eyes out for the hurricane heading that way, sort of.

This grass has always been good for all the years I’ve been paying attention. Greg has been doing Gaston’s longer so I’d wait until he chimes in.

There was that one year where a bunch of us got stuck there for an extra day... But it was a fun adventure anyway! I seem to remember Greg being part of that group.

I was just chilling Sunday morning when I saw Bruce sprint out to his plane and take off, followed by Lance, and I didn't really know what was going on for a few minutes until the sky opened up. There was a bit of a "hot spot" just to the west of us that kept sprouting new boomers.

Then, some non-PoA pilot in a Bonanza tried to take off and was not successful in becoming airborne - Maybe because he added about two hundred pounds of mud to his airplane in the process.
