Scammer on Facebook

So I responded to an ad on face book for a Mooney M20K. Pics looked good, price was a bit lower than market, not crazy low, but enough to make my spidey-sense start to tingle. Anyway, attached is the discussion in had with the seller (scammer). I got a good laugh at least.

1800 pounds is likely the empty weight of the aircraft. Never ascribe to scamming that which can be explained by incompetence or you may never find a plane to buy.

There's a fair number of scammers on TAP and an infinite number of scammers on FB.
It's even worse if you consider airplane accessories, like headsets, sentry/stratus, etc. I wouldn't buy any accessory online unless it was from a very long tenured member of PoA/EBay/etc.

But the good news is scammers are turds that are usually easy to spot. Since they typically have the IQ of a potato they say things like Mooneys can take 1800lbs of LL.

Hope you reported the listing so a more trusting individual doesn't fall prey

I once listed a Garmin 430 for sale on eBay. When I saw my own photos for another one I pretended to be an interested buyer, but was concerned that those same photos had been listed before, so the seller sent me new photo images that were just harvested from a Google search. He wanted me to send the funds via Western Union, but when I told him I was going to be in Munich in the next few days and would pick it up in person and pay in cash he refused.

There are an increasing number of ads with lengthy, flowery descriptions full of superlatives, and are AI-generated, and with some grammar indicating the poster to not be an American English speaker (“aircrafts”, non-standard syntax) and trying way too hard to convince the reader of how great the plane is.

I recently inquired via TAP’s link about a plane for sale in Florida, only to receive an email from a name not even close to the seller, and with a .ru (Russia) email address. Nice try, Ivan.

Probably a scam but wouldn’t surprise me if some are really just very incompetent. Last week I called an FBO at a major airport in Canada. As we have an AvGas shortage up here again, I called ahead to make sure they had AvGas available. The conversation went something like this (FBO staff having a thick Chinese accent):

Me: Hi, do you guys have AvGas?
FBO: Yes yes we have gas, when you come?
Me: Tomorrow, but just want to confirm that you have AvGas. 100LL.
FBO: Yes, we have gas. Lots of jet come here get gas.
Me: Okay, that’s my concern. Do you only have gas for jets or also for piston engine powered planes?
FBO: I don’t understand.
Me: What type of gas do you have?
FBO: We have gas for airplanes.
Me: Have a great day.

And I hung up, called the other FBO and stayed with them.
