Thanks for posting this. The irony is that it looks like there were better options straight ahead, especially if he had enough airspeed to make the landfill. Still, he almost threaded the needle, though, but for that vehicle. https://www.globalair.com/airport/germack-7d9.aspx

I have no idea what’s around the area, sounds like he was low, but had a little smack. No sense worrying about the engine, it ain’t coming back.
That road does look tight, then the power lines on one side. I was flying the other day, evaluating a few road options, farm country. It’s not easy to always see poles & lines from altitude.
I lean to just taking the soybean field, of course he may not of had options.

From what I read in the prelim, it sounded as if the prop went through a phase of rapid-onset entropic self-disassembly. Any thoughts on what could cause that?

Prop control was found full forward. Overspeed? Gear box going to direct drive, how could THAT happen? I have no clue.

Prop pitch control failure, blades went to flat pitch and allowed the engine to overspeed to the point of shattering the hub?
