Yup -- don't change much of anything. All it says is that if you want to collect money or other compensation for YE flights, it's a 91.146 operation. The effect of that is Chapters can no longer get FBO's to donate or cut-rate fuel to YE flights, or to get money from sponsors for those flights to help pay the pilots' expenses. While I've heard of several FBO's who'd help on gas, I don't think much sponsorship money has been collected. In any event, this has no effect on the traditional YE flights where the pilots donate the flying time (which remains tax deductible).

YEP ! like I'm going to use my part 135 aircraft and certificae to charge those little suckers every thing in their piggy bank.

In these times of high gas prices, half of the pilots/owners have all but quit flying yet the FAA says if we get cheap fuel it is compensation.

How self defeating is that?

If you are referring to making impossible the stunts like folks keep pulling to circumvent the rules on flying for compensation/hire, they will keep trying to do that by writing more rules as long as those folks keep trying those stunts.

Ok you got the guys, now lets make it harder for every one else!

Yes Ron you can keep blaming it on the guys that don't follow the rules and back more regulation in the name of safety. Those guys are not going to follow the new rules either.... :dunno:

Please protect us from ourselves in the name of the F the A and the A. Amen

I don't make the rules, I just try to live by them. Whether or not the folks who broke the old rules will follow the new ones is immaterial to the rule-writers -- the FAA has to be seen doing something to justify their existence before Congress, and this is how they do it. The problem with this compensation issue is that there doesn't seem to be any way to set a reasonable standard and have everyone live up to its spirit. The only thing that seems to work for the FAA is an absolute prohibition on all forms of compensation outside an authorized commercial operation. Can't say I like it, but that's the way the FAA seems to see it. If you can come up with a way to allow compensation for charity flights without folks abusing it, I'd love to hear about it.

Yea Status Quo..... The rule writers do not have to do as you proclaim they still work for us. But the only way to stop them is to have a ground swell from the masses but that won't happen when you just go along to get along.. Y0U WIN I give Up

Let us all get the government and the FAA that we deserve:(

I can certainly see why collecting sponsorship funds and/or a program that pays a pilot's expenses would be a 91.146 issue, but a fuel discount?
