I read doc's thread about gettin golder and his wiener and stuff which was weird but I guess I don't have to have the market cornered on POA wiener talk.

I have a fitbit that I don't use much but was thinking if anyone wants a bit of competition maybe we can all join up and keep each other in check.

There is a fitbit app where we can encourage, and also taunt one another and track our daily steps. I found when wearing mine, I was far more inclined to move more.

I am sure there are those on here that will leave most of us in the dust but we may sort ourselves out into groups of people that are on par with similar daily step counts and try to rise within those groups.

The fitbit app measures your activity like this

And it shows you where you rank amongst others in your group

If any other fit bit users are interested, I will charge mine up and send a link to join my friends group.

F-ck no! Those things turn people into d-bags, because they think they are so special that they need to share with others how many miles they have walked. I can't imagine it being much better in a group of people who fitbit.

Does clipping one to my dog's collar count?

I have a Garmin FR220 for running. It autosyncs to Strava (you can set that up from Garmin Connect). I know Strava has social stuff and isn't so device centric. I haven't used any of the social stuff, but it lets you friend people and share workouts.

I am not real interested in tracking my daily steps or sleep patterns, but sharing workouts can be motivating.

I never share.
I am more embarrassed that people can see I only walked form my desk to the fridge 4 times and then to my bedroom.

Make it sound manly and say you were going for protein shakes, or that the fitbit didn't record all the arm curls you did at your desk.

it's amazing how much more active I appear when I wear that thing on my right wrist than on my left.

:wink2:

just started to wear one, don't want to share, only want it to keep myself on track. Really don't want to compete, with anyone. But Thanks

Don't have a Fitbit, but do use the app on my phone. So it only counts steps I take with the phone (no steps recorded during my naked dancing). But I'm definitely in the market for some motivation to move more than I have recently. (Warning: I've done NOTHING for the better part of a year, but am a recovering ultramarathoner... so could slip back into that sort of activity.)

The hell with fitbit...
Just use common sense.....

I weighed 190 lbs and 6'1" and wore 34 /34 jeans back in 1978...

I still weight 190 and am 6'1" and STILL wear 34 /34 jeans almost 40 years later...

That is a good enough of a health tracking process for me....

I'm sort of a Strava snob myself.

I signed up for Strava about a month ago, since it autosyncs to Garmin Connect. I assume you are uploading your rides. Do you just use the Strava phone app or do you have a bike computer that syncs?

I just use the Iphone app, seems to work fine for me.

I used to use Runkeeper, but Strava does a better job. One thing that Strava does better than some of the other sites is that it replaces your GPS elevation track with the map terrain information, which is a lot more accurate for cumulative elevation tracking.

EDIT:

Found you on Strava. That was quick.

My Garmin FR220 doesn't do multi sport, so I have used the iPhone app when I am on my bike. It seems to work well enough. I don't really like hauling my phone along for running, though. The Garmin will sync via Bluetooth to my phone and then Strava picks up the workout a few minutes later, so it is all pretty seemless.

I know someone who wore one of those to get a discount on health insurance, he would sit at his desk shaking the thing all the time, got a big discount.....

It wasn't strapped to his right wrist was it?

I hear if you switch wrists it feels like someone else is wearing it

I really have fairly little interest in cybergloating my biking exploits (although I've done it once or twice I will admit.) I use activity tracking and mapping apps mainly for the mapping feature, so I can review my route and plan for better routes. Without the mapping capability, I wouldn't have much use for them, which is why Fitbit wouldn't work for me.

I'll get one and join up if things aren't going well. I'll make you all feel much better about your accomplishments/activity.

I'm not useless. I can be used as a bad example.

I use strava, it's not for gloating, but I love to see the progress throughout the season, our bike season runs about the end of March (still cold) until about Thanksgiving, although with the lack of snow so far people have been out. So it's always a struggle getting it going again in the spring. This year I joined an indoor trainer group, these guys are animals, I'm hoping to start in March or April in much better shape than previous years.

I wore an UP24 for a year or so. Pitched it when I recognized my iPhone does the same thing as a step tracker/stair tracker/distance walked tracker. Click on the little red heart "Health" icon on an iPhone.

I know some guys do upload their trainer activities to Strava. I don't have a trainer, but I do spin cycle class at the gym and I occasionally serve as a substitute instructor. So far for the year I have roughly 3,500 miles of biking. If I were to add in the spin cycle sessions, I'd have about 900 miles additional (assuming a conservative 15 miles per spin hour.) Fortunately the weather never gets so cold I need to quit riding for the season, although I do ride significantly less miles in the Winter.

There is one really cool thing about Strava that a lot of people don't know about. This link is an activity playback utility. You can take your URL from any ride or run you do, put it in there, and it will give you an animated view of your progress WITH all of the Strava users out there that are in the same area. So like, say you ride behind some hot chick and you want to know who she is (*see disclaimer) well if she's on Strava, you can find out which Strava user it is and see their tracks as well. So like if you're in a densely traveled area, like a bike path, you can see all kinds of little Strava icons buzzing up and down the trail. Quite entertaining.

(*this is a hypothetical example only)

I had an UP band until last year when I accidentally left it at a TSA checkpoint .

I kind of miss it. I never posted my stats or anything - but I did find that it subconsciously motivated me to get out a little more, park a little further from the store, and so on. I'm not proud that it takes a stupid piece of electronic jewelry for me to do these things, but hey, whatever works. I haven't replaced it yet because I figure my next phone (watch?) with have the motion detector built in.

I was on track for a 3,000 or 4,000 mile year, then I messed up my knee, just getting back to my last winter power levels, but feeling good.

I didn't know that about the playback utility, I'll have to try it.
