Great use of GA. The story however reflects a sad situation in the Lobster industry that has been around for years. My Wifes family had a home on Cape Cod and had lobster pots out in Cape Cod bay. We used to pull them and have the best baked stuffed Lobster mmmm. Anyway at the time I did a fair amount of scuba diving and was interested in seeing what was on the bottom of the bay. My father in law talked me out of it as the commercial lobstermen saw a scuba diver and the automatically thought poacher or thief raiding their pots and you could end up with lead in your head or a gaffing hook in your neck.

These guys fed their family on what they caught and the competion was fierce. Pulling a bug out of their pot or pulling someone elses pot all together was taking food from their kids mouth. If someone got caught they were likely to end up as bait.

This particular situation(Metinicus) has been smoldering for months; not just because of the current low prices the fishermen are getting for their catches. The "smoldering" reference is akin to "Turf War." There had been mentions of threats, "allegations" of fishermen carrying guns on boats, and other actions which seemed to assimilate a "lighted fuse."

Divers? The only places divers are welcomed in our waters are those areas where sea urchins and certain other sea life is "a permitted item." And those areas are closely controlled by number of days diving is permitted and in what areas. I think that a diver's permit is also for a specific zone, and those zones may not be "open" during identical periods.

My cousin back home in Cushing(on the mainland) sent me the following e-mail which recounts a close-up view of the shooting.

"JERRY: Can you send me the link re PPH's coverage of the Matinicus fracus. I want to read the Comments. I have to call you to tell you everything, you will laugh your ass off---I was on a Chat session via Facebook with Biscuit Ames' girlfriend, Kachine (aka Cheena) from the very beginning of this episode--she lives right on the shore and was communicating by iota all the crap going down--she finally got so nosey, she went down to the dock just in time to watch Vance shoot Chris; and Vance's daughter passed out on top of her--like I said, I will have to relate via ph--too much to tell. But, I really want to access the PPH comments you referred to. Bottom line, this situation has been ongoing for many months & law enforcement had many opportune times to intervene, which they declined to do for various reasons, the main one being they are AFRAID AND SCARED to become involved w/that island so they use the excuse that they can monitor themselves out there--in other words, that Matinicus is tagged as a "lawless Island" is all in conjunction with and in total agreement with law enforcement's opinion and desires. This never should have happened and now Law Enforcement, the Marine Patrol, and the Commissioner of Marine Resources find it convenient to blame EVERYONE on the entire island and feel justified to shut off fishing for EVERYONE because law enforcement continually fails to do their job. Also, let it be known that 2 Marine Patrol Officers were right there on the dock of the incident, and wouldn't even get off Alan Miller's boat; that they conveniently stowed themselves down below in it. While they were conveniently hiding, right beside the parties, the gun shot incident occurred. They were waiting for State cops, etc. to arrive because they did not dare to intervene. So someone got shot because a couple someone's weren't doing their jobs, yet again."
