True story...

Guys wife is going to college at an Orlando area university. Guy drives his wife on campus to register for some class. He drops her off at the building and searches for a spot to park. There is nothing...literally nothing. He finally finds a parking meter available. He pulls up and goes to put money in the meter.

The meter is jammed and won't accept his change. Screwing around with it for 5 minutes or so a meter maid dude happens along. The guy explains whats going on and the meter maid dude tries to operate it. No luck. He puts a bag over it and when asked by the guy he tells him it's okay to park there.

So, the guy goes to find his wife. They both come back to find a ticket on the car. The guy refuses to pay. He appeals the ticket with a letter to the university traffic enforcement group. It's a committee comprised of students and campus police. The letter explains what happened and the exact circumstances.

The committee is not impressed and says the parking fine stays.

The guy is ENRAGED! The meter maid dude SAID he could park there with the busted meter. He TRIED to pay these jackwads. So he says screw them, he ain't paying.

Wife receives a letter saying if the husband doesn't pay she can't graduate. Now the husband wants to firebomb the university as after all, he's the guy footing the bill in the first place. On principle this parking ticket is just wrong.

So, what would you do if you were 'this guy'? Pay the fine?

I'd say that the meter enforcement officer has no right to change the rules =P

typical "Captain" BS - He's making this one up just like he made up all the others.

I believe the story. It's much the way DC's parking enforcement works. So much so that one of the media outlets has started a "Ticket Busters" program...

I'd say that the meter enforcement officer has no right to change the rules =P

Hate it Captain but he is right.

Meter made was being cool to "dude with wife in College" and circumstances bit said dude on rear...

I would want to see the written policy giving the College the right to connect wife to car...

Meter maid dude is acting as an agent of the university and gave the guy a free pass.

1st year law class had a similar question posed. Speed limit was 55. Law passed raising it to 70 eff. 12:01 a.m. xx/xx/xx. The night before, highway workers replaced the signs. New signs showed 70, at 11 p.m. and guy was stopped and given a ticket for going 70 in a 55. The gist of it was that there was no right/wrong answer, just our defending our position. My position was that the highway workers were agents of the state. IIRC I got maybe a B on the paper.

I think that is different than the case presented. If the meter had a sign on it that said "free parking" I might agree with you.

I don't think there is any policy needed. You attend the university, you play by their rules. Don't like it? Go somewhere else.

It sucks but if it's a private institution, who are you going to appeal to? Where does it say that you are entitled to a diploma by any circumstances? I would be willing to bet they could withhold a diploma for whatever reason they wanted.

No fun but that's probably how it is.

yup - a bag over a meter means no parking in these parts

Fight it to the end. My Uni tried to charge me with 2 felonies for parking violations. One call from my attorney and they were calling me apologizing.

Pay the fine so she can graduate, figure another way to get his pound of flesh out of the school.

Now the husband wants to firebomb the university...

Hope he didn't say that to anyone....:hairraise:...

Why is Captain in quotes? You don't believe that either?

Either way you're the fool cause the story is 100% true and I am a Captain.

Had better than a sign saying free parking. It had the official responsible for enforcement telling him personally parking was free.

He SAYS a parking official told him yo park free. Produce the witness to the university, or shut up and pay. No proof = didn't happen. The other side of "trust but verify."

Just get on with the firebombing already. Hot tip they film the crowds at suspicious fires arsonists like to stick around and enjoy their work. So if you are going to watch it burn do it from a distance with your huge telephoto lens.

2 things: 1) guy may or may not owe a fine, but the campus parking rules regarding parking at a malfunctioning meter need to be found first. 2) Student didn't park at the meter. Does the car have a parking sticker or license plate that's tied to the student?

It is simple. Appealed and denied. He got "his day in court". Pay the damned fine and grow the hell up!

pay the fine on your amex right before the diplomas are handed out, wife get diploma and official transcript, challenge the charge...

It wasn't exactly a 'day in court'. It was a panel of snot nosed college kids reading a ticket on one side and a letter from the guy on the other.

Of fire bomb the school.

Seriously, pay the fine and move on. Life is too short. This is not the hill he wants to die on. A parking fine?

I am still trying to digest the fact people pay big money to go to collage, and those leaches / schools, install parking meters in front of the classrooms to get even more of the students money....:mad2::mad2::mad2:.....

Hey...somehow they have to support the institution! You think the absurd cost of tuition is enough to cover $100k+ salaries for tenured professors while they go on sabbatical?

All any of us would get. And unless there is an appeals board, your buddy is SOL. Pay the fine and move along. Nothing more to see.
Oh. And worthy of. consideration is IF the Uni has an agreement with the state's registry. Your buddy could be looking at additional fines, charges, and other penalties. Some Uni cops ARE recognized as police with arrest powers.

Yup... I "think" UCF security people are OCSD approved...

captain is in quotes because it is meaningless in this forum - everything you claim here is hearsay and your behavior in the past condemns you

As does yours. Thbbbbbbbbtttttttttt

Seriously, captain is meaningless on a pilot forum like trebec is meaningless on a jeaprody forum. It's a term we all understand. Hardly meaningless. In fact, you OBVIOUSLY put WAY too much meaning into it.

AW,,, Come on.... Captain has never stretched the truth before...:rolleyes:...

Where is that Pinocio with the extended nose smiley thing anyway ...:dunno::dunno:

you're the one who makes up things just to argue about them...always have and always will...its just who you are

Is fighting it worth all the aggravation? If you think it is worth fighting, pay the fine to not disrupt the wife's graduation, then take the school to court. If you're right you will win either way.

Whilst in college, I stepped outside a bar that was located in the middle of a long street in Deland, FL. A patrol cop was parked across the street on his motorcycle and calls me over. I look both ways and promptly walk across the street and ask the officer what I can help him with. A-hole says, "Nothing, I just need your information to write you up for jay walking. You should have used the crosswalk." True story.

What's the fine $25??? If the guy really has it in his craw, make an appointment with the dean of the college and let him know his displeasure and tell him not one penny when the alumni association calls. Maybe it will work, if not, pay the fine...

request an appeal, get a notarized statement from meter maid if appeal is granted.

Whatever the verdict is abide.

Sure is awesome that a center of "higher learning" will deny a student who's passed all requirements a degree for money for a parking meter. Perfectly shows the real priorities of the place.

typical "Captain" BS - He's making this one up just like he made up all the others.

He's pretty much described the SOP for every university in America when it comes to parking fines.

My lawyer had a chat with my Uni over a similar situation. They decided it was in their best interest to let it go.

Pay the fine. Then, the first time the university hits you up for a donation (and they will), reply that they got their one and only donation when you paid the fine. Universities like donations from alumni. Mine does. Tell them why you aren't giving them money when they ask. You'll have to wait for the gratification, but the time will come.

Easy. Pay the fine and move on. Not worth cardiac arrest worry about small stuff

And why is that a problem? This is a forum where we talk about crap. At the end of the day it's mostly about entertainment.

I don't care you don't believe me or the story. I'm bothered that you add nothing by pointing it out. Like shouting out "he was wearing sunglasses in the last shot!!" at a movie. Sure, it's true but you're screwing it up for everyone else for no benefit.

If you happen to see a magician palm a card you don't have to interrupt the show to point it out to everyone and don't be surprised if the magician is annoyed at you for doing so.

-Break....

I guess the guys issue is this;

-He feels he complied with the rules as stated by the employee,
-He feels the Uni has no basis to connect his fine to his wife. Without that leap the fine NEVER gets paid as he just walks away.
-He feels slighted by having to abide by the decisions of kids who are, at best, still trying to find they're own arses.
