Written Question Bank

Wow, I had a massive brain fart there. I'll need to learn to read more carefully before I embark on this adventure. It seems all the questions with the "H" prefix are relevant to the PPL ASEL written. I'll now go to the penalty box and feel shame.

Wow, they are all relevent. I was just scanning before, but now that I actually look at them all I see that I was incredibly wrong. Mods, can we delete this thread? It's just wasting bandwidth.

I think you're right the first time.

As I see it there is no easy rule like all the H's. Looking over the Knowledge codes below is a list of the one's I believe do not apply. The most reliable way to determine this is to look at the reference for the knowledge codes.

H401 - Physics - Balloon Flying Handbook
H703-H742 - Various - Rotocraft Flying Handbook
H767-H780 - Gyroplanes - Helicopter Flying Handbook and Gyroplane Flying Handdbook
N21 - Performance - Soaring Flight Manual
O30-O220 - Various - Balloon
P01-P11 - Various - Airships

Easiest thing to do is use the tests at exams4pilots.org or webexams.com (or Sportys, if you must). That cuts it down to only the relavant ones for you.

Thanks for the understanding everyone. Folks at some other to remain nameless boards would have had my bacon for lunch if I had made such an uninformed post.

I would make fun of you, but I've probably done about 9239829 more dumb things today than you, and it's only 10:00 :)

And he works for an airline? Remind me not to fly Colgan in the northeast... ;)

Well, I'm a DoD employee, so that shoud sum up my lack of attention to detail(wink).

Yo Teller... Beech 1900 or Dash-8 ? Do you have a preference ? I have a special place in my heart for the Dash-8. PHL <--> SWF is usually a DASH-8.

Beech all the way! We climb better (3k fpm at 180kts to 15,000 vs their 1k fpm at 140kts to 10,000 and slower after that), go faster (248 indicated vs. 200-210), and use less gas. Not to mention the Dash is really hard to land smoothly (the Beech is a breeze as long as you flare a lot) and they use auto pilots..we hand fly everything. That's just my opinion, anyways :). We out run them all over the place, and can still slow down better (so we can stay fast on an approach to keep spacing clear behind us). The Beech is an ugly ugly plane, but it's a performer (we even out climb and go faster than the Saab 340!)

The 1900 is not ugly. I think it's sexy. But then, I like Cessna's 208 too. The question is... could you take-off from Little Cayman (MWCL or LYB) ? It's my favorite scuba diving spot. Soon we won't have DOD charts for the Caribbean.

Thanks for the numbers... nice to know y'all are more fuel efficient. Eventually, that will be focus.

Apples to oranges -- the Beech 1900 may be more fun to fly, but it takes two of them to haul the same number of pax as even a short Dash-8.

It may take two, but we'll take half of them further and faster :). I did forget to mention the two advantages (in my opinion) of the Dash...1) APU - they have one, we don't, so we can only run the AC with an engine running and 2) Flight Attendent - they have one, we don't, so they get catered drinks and pretzels and the pilots don't have to board and deplane pax. Of course, the APU makes a god-awful high pitch whinning noise that is deafening within 200 feet...and from what I hear, most pilots have the same complaint about their flight attendents :).

LYB is a little short at 3,300 feet, at least according to our company rules, but Part 121 is fairly restrictive. We're not allowed to use anything less than 4,500. In terms of what the plane can do, I wouldn't be surprised if that's well within its abilities. These planes were designed for down and dirty flying off grass and dirt. I don't know that I'd want to try it without spending some extra time in the sim (and the landing probably wouldn't look pretty) but someone much better than I could probably make it happen.

I have heard many good words about the 1900 but sexy is not one of them. Personally I always wondered how a King Air could've morphed into.... that.

Haha, yaa, I've never heard sexy for the 1900 either. I love the airplane, but it's just funny looking, I think. It's a beast though...we often refer to it as the venerable 1900.

I think everything that was wrong with the King Air, they fixed on the 1900 by sticking something extra on the outside. Need a wider CG range? Give it an extra non-movable stabilizer. Need more lateral stability? Give it HUGE strakes! Need a lower Vmc? Give it huge taillets! Need more room to stand up? Just streach the cabin a few feet! I think thats the worst part of the plane...the "Stand up Cabin" that makes it look like it has a tumor. (The cabin is 71", I'm 74", it's not a stand up cabin). The C models actually look a little more normal without all the extra stuff (and a normal size cabin), but the Cs are disappearing pretty quick. I'd be happy flying the 1900 for a while longer, though, that's for sure!

seriously? which dash are you talking about? The dash 8's we fly cruise at 300.

Which ever model it is that Piedmont flies, we smoke in the 1900. I'm talking IAS, not TAS...I've never bothered to figure our TAS.

I could be way off on their speed, but I know we're always speed restricted when we're behind them (especially on departure, unless we can talk NY into altitude restricting them and letting us get above them and go) or vectored around them if we're far enough away.
