has something even worse than the Paperclip! It's the stupid "ring" each time the mouse selects something.

The motherboard in the WinXP system died, I was forced to go to Win7 (gun to my head!).

How do I turn that thing off? What's it called, anyway - Son of Clippy?

Must be the default "theme" your machine was set up with, since my new Windows 7 laptop doesn't make sounds on mouse selects.

To change the sound associated with mouse selects, place the mouse anywhere over the desktop and right-click to bring up a floating menu. There should be a "Personalize" option - click on that. A "Sounds" icon should be somewhere on the resulting dialog. Click on that; yet another dialog appears that shows a tree-like structure showing sounds associated with actions. One of those is probably the culprit and you need to assign "(none)" to it.

If all else fails, search the Windows 7 help system.

Discovered the problem - it's the tablet software. I don't use a mouse and Win7 needs something to provide feedback. What I see is an effect similar to a stone being dropped in water - a circle that blooms around the cursor point then disappears.

Looks like a call to Wacom on Friday - if anyone's home.

on my machine that effect is enabled to help locate the current cursor position on the screen

it can be turned off under pointer options in the touchpad properties dialog box

as they say ymmv

Oh - you meant "ring" literally, not a "ring" sound! D'oh!
