ATC asked for winds aloft information the other day, and I had to admit that my GPS could do it but I couldn’t. I’m not sure which values the KLN 94 reads from the other instruments and which require my input, but my specific question is this: regarding CAS, my altimeter allows adjustments for OAT and altitude, and I almost always keep it adjusted for current conditions. But if the KLN 94 asks for CAS as part of the W/A calculation, should I reset the ASI to sea level and 15 dc (standard day) to read CAS?

Sorry, that should have read “my airspeed indicator has adjustments for...”

Calibrated airspeed corrects for Pitot tube installation errors, not variations in air density.

Had you filed /G? I've never had ATC ask me for winds aloft, but I have provided PIREPs with winds aloft.

Brad: It was a trip early this week into SoCal with high winds and LLWS, so he was trying to get information on the ride for another aircraft.

Clark: Understood, many sources list the correction generally as “instrument and installation error”. The subsequent aux pages on the GPS prompt entries for pressure altitude and temperature, hence my suggestion that maybe my entry for CAS should be from the ASI set to standard day values.

Depends on the installation. The KLN 94 I had in my Cherokee used the GS and track data, but I just had to enter the TAS and Heading on the Aux Page to get the winds aloft info.

That is neat. Never knew I could do this, that would have been great to use on longer trips when bored in cruise. :)
But I don't have a KLN anymore. Sold the airplane. I got a c*appy Garmin now. :( Oh well. But at least the airplane is nicer and faster.

A garmin will do it too. Mine does it automagically since the Aspen feeds it data.

The GPS is doing the air data calcs, it really wants just the calibrated airspeed to figure winds to a gnats ass. Most of use would be happy with IAS and a slightly less accurate wind estimate.

Aux Page 9 gives the Wind information.

"The AUX 9 page is used to determine the present wind direction and speed. In addition, the headwind or tailwind component of the wind is displayed."

You will enter the TAS and HDG and the GPS will calculate the wind speed, direction, and head / tail wind component. If you do not have the TAS handy, you can use Aux Page 6 to determine the Pressure Altitude. The Pressure Altitude will be fed to Aux Page 8 to be used in the TAS calculations. If the data had previously been entered on Aux Pages 6 and 8, the user will just need to enter the current heading on Aux Page 9 for the Wind calculation.

Wow some really sharo pilots out there

I have the klm94 I really like in skyane but am losing display in track an ds track not sure what going to do next

What to replace klm 94 with I have 60-2 autopilot works good bendix hsi 155 radios good
