Your idea is great, but unfortunately the FAA doesn’t think so. Fulfilling this proposal would be considered compensation in the eyes of the FAA and is by all means ‘illegal’.

It is a trade, what's the difference if I am paying with cash or service for an aircraft?

I can't see how this would be illegal. Illegal might be if he offered to do my bathroom in return for me flying him around in my airplane. As far as I can see he just wants to swap an airplane for a new bathroom, no flying involved.

I don’t think this is illegal. People trade planes all the time. You may have to draft a “bill of sale” for tax purposes and report it as bartering income, but other than that I see no issues.

Good luck. Would be a great deal for someone who has an estate airplane and needs a new bathroom.

Okay, so maybe I interpreted your post incorrectly. Are you wanting to exchange a bathroom remodel with flight time, or exchange the remodel for an airplane?

If the former, the FAA makes it clear that acting as PIC for compensation or hire is whether the pilot’s receipt of something of value is conditioned on the pilot operating the aircraft. Exchanging work for free flight time would be illegal. Exchanging work for an aircraft would not be illegal.

The guy wants to trade a airplane for a bathroom. How is that not legal????
So if I tell you to come mow my grass and I will give you my Cessna in exchange FAA won't let us do that? Where you get your info from?
 
Might be better to pay him a low amount, and let him buy the plane at a low price....Plus have a written contract.
Very low, to avoid as much taxation as possible.
Just sayin..

This is incorrect. As long as the work/service one is providing is not the actual flying of the aircraft, you can exchange your services for flight time and even instruction. You are not being compensated for acting as a pilot if you perform a non flying service to the plane owner or CFI. You are paying to fly vis a vis your rendered services.

Depends on how far you go. Our master bath was a complete remodel and cost considerably north of that; the main bath we spent maybe $2K or so. All new marble tile, paint, etc.

Would it? I could see doing a bathroom for someone else in exchange for the receiver of the new bathroom flying you to destination of your choice on a schedule of your choice as being considered flying for compensation or hire. But you give me a bathroom and I give you the keys to my airplane for you fly? That's just me renting my airplane to someone with an oddball method of payment. If the pilot is one that did the bathroom work and that same pilot is the one flying the airplane, how exactly is that pilot being compensated for flying an airplane?

Reminds me of the Aggie frontiersman who was challenged to make love to a woman and wrassle a really mean grizzly bear in the same Afternoon. He accepts and heads out the door.

An hour or two later, he returns with his clothes then up, deep scratches all over his face and torso, only to ask.

"Now where is that woman you wanted me to wrassle?"
 
It’s just bartering as far as the IRS and FAA are concerned. No different than trading a car for a remodeled bathroom. If he’s a talented remodeler it could be a good deal for someone. It would be better if he was offering a kitchen remodel as those can really add up!
Some are suggesting a clapped out plane in trade and that would be ripping him off. He’s already limited in funds, so why hobble him with a hunk of junk that needs a new engine, radios etc.?

In scenario 2, he would not be receiving compensation for flight time, he would be giving it. If paying for flight time was illegal the entire industry would have a great big problem.
