Why do so many people, particularly women, insist on killing virtually every ant, fly, and spider that enters their property? Can't we all just get along? Are you an insecticidal manic?

Just like every year, when it heats up in L.A., the ants come inside, not to eat anything, but just to hang out until it cools down. Yesterday they were swarming into the garage and my folks wanted me to kill them which I couldn't understand. Personally, I try not to kill anything thats not attacking me or about to be eaten, except for my preemptive strikes on mosquitoes.

I can understand the whole killing the mouse thing cause of that whole Black Plague thing and damage they cause, but for the life of me can't understand the excitement over a small lizard in the house or anything else that rarely attacks people.

What about the "circle of life" and the "ecosystem" (in your house/yard)?

Is this intended to be a serious environmentalism post?

If so, it will be moved to spin.

If not, EW, A BUG, SQUISH IT!

Had no idea this was environmentalism, as such, but do what u must. I thought the post was confined to one's house or yard and not society at large as SZ stuff tends to lean. It was a Lion King ref.

I'm just trying to understand the above mentality.

Every year, we have a problem with crickets. Some bugs I can handle, others I'm not so fond of. Crickets just remind me of jumping cockroaches. They tend to swarm the apartment area where the grounds crew keep the lawns constantly watered. I've had a few too many want to crawl into bed with me to appreciate them. Not only that, they keep you up all night!

Oh now you've done it! Chucks head isn't going to fit through the doorway. :goofy:

Environmentalism, in this case, in my view, would be if you were leading up to an argument that, for example, insects have a right to live in our houses and we have a moral obligation to let them because we're no better than insects.

If you just wanna know why people hate bugs, have at it. :)

THATS more like it!

Eat the bugs or make them into biofuel!

I have a better solution. I point out the bugs to my boy dog Kurzon, and he eats them. There, predation/prey and an environmentally friendly approach.

I like that. I'll be doing that with my German Shorthaired Pointer, "Mauser", from now on.

I knew a woman who "rescued" cockroaches she'd see in the office.

They're called "bugs" and "pests" for a reason....

I'm bigger and I have the ability to rid myself of the pest.

Plus, its hard to convice a woman who's raring to go that the lizard that just crawled up her leg was no big deal.

I'm OK with anything that eats flies, ants, mosquitos and cockroaches... which is why the very shy, seldom-seen centipedes and spiders in my building don't bother me at all.

But I have a limit- if I find a creepy-crawly on my person or in my bed, it's a goner. Hasn't happened in a long time, but I'll not hesitate- I'm not getting up in the middle of the night to escort a spider outside; sorry.

The cockroach is my enemy, though... without an aggressive campaign of slaughter, they will take over. Someone brought some with them recently when they moved here- I've only seen a couple, but I'm thinking about getting a gekko. They love roaches, and are very good at hunting them. Also very shy- they hang on the wall in a dark corner during the day and hunt late at night.

The day I moved into this place years ago, a praying mantis flew in the window- on the 4th floor, in a very urban environment! I didn't kill it, and not just because they're endangered... I think they're just very cool, and unlike the things they eat, they'd never bother a human.

Did someone call me? hehehe.

I saw a little baby praying mantis at the house yesterday. Tiny little thing, no longer than 1/2 inch, but all miniature.

As I live and breathe- Brian Austin in the house!

I was talking to the neighbor and his 80-something Mom, She's getting therapy by planting flowers. She mentioned she wants to work on my "flower bed" which was and has been taken cover by kudzu-like thistle. She said those plants make good medicine that they sell for lotsa money. I told her she could have all of the medicine she wants. :D

Then I mentioned I noticed a huge ant city in my front yard. I was wondering if I needed to poison them. She had been lamenting that they didn't have any ants on their lot. I told her she could have all the ants she wants. ;) She said it depends what kind of ants they are. All I know is had a bunch on the back window frame and I baited them with ant traps. :dunno:

Otherwise I like watching the various wildlife.

Be kind to your 6-legged friend, for that bug may be somebody's mother...

If it moves in my garage or my apartment it dies.
