When was your first flight in a GA airplane for "09"?

If you had to fly for a living today call in sick and go fly something fun!

Today, in about an hour. Weather wasn't looking good for pilotage and DR for Saturday so we're doing it today with planned stops in Brownwood and Kerrville. It looks good up there.

I told him there's gonna be a diversion somewhere. I'll pick it on a whim. Now, where shall it be? Fredericksberg for a good burger or Llano for some Cooper's BBQ? Gosh, such responsibility shouldn't be left to a CFI but I'll deal with it. :)

Not me! Combination of temps and winds made me relax at home this morning, although I did have a flight scheduled. The plane is tied down on the ramp, and it is most likely covered with the remains of yesterday's snow and ice. Solar de-icing won't work today!

Wilbur Wright?

This is a photograph of the start of Wilbur Wright's first flight over water; at Governors Island in New York on September 29, 1909; he flew at an altitude of from 40 to 100 feet and proceeded to circle Governors Island twice, landing back at the drill field; total time was about 7 minutes and 10 seconds and distance covered was estimated at 2 miles.

Don't fly if you are not feeling well. Ask me how I know this.:yikes:

Just got back from the airport.

In the air was a mighty fine way to start oh-nine(r)!

Don't know if I'm first, but did get in the air today about 3:30PM EST. Winds here have been kicking for the last two days, but calmed down after lunch, enough to make it managable. By 4:30 it was pretty well calm, smooth and crystal clear. Could just make out the NY skyline from 3500' feet while still in PA. All in all, a great afternoon!

Well, I WAS at the airport around 3 today - had the plane out of the hangar. Unfortunately, the battery just didn't have enough juice.... so onto the charger it goes.

Maybe tomorrow.

Well, I was wheels in the well at 6am today, but it was PT121 :(. We did a Pt 91 ferry flight at 0815, does that count?

i made the first tow around 10 AM. 3 hrs of towing and another hour and a half in gliders. great way to start the year.

Wheels-up at about 10:20 CST (so much for that "airborne by 8:00" idea), headed for MRF, Dr. Dave, Tony, Pete, Andy, and a whole rafter of Chrises of all sizes. Had figured on flying non-stop, but the combination of not-full tanks and beastly headwinds (40-45 knots!) meant I decided to stop for gas at...

...Brownwood, which has avgas for $2.52/gallon!

If you'da timed it right, you could have waved at me as I sprinted past, on the way to the bathroom.

You'd be "winner, winner, chicken dinner" with either...

I saw a guy running really fast but he was being chased by other guys with guns. That was you? :D

We were there about 12.30. The dang FBO was closed up. So much for some lemonade while my student handled matters for the next leg. You must have gone to the north side of the big hangar, near Pete's office.

We did top off up there but put in all of six gallons. He didn't get it quite to the tabs, it appears. But, he's learning.

AQO is at $2.40.

You'd be "winner, winner, chicken dinner" with either...
We were wondering if the burger joint would be open. I was trying to pick a point he was least on top of his position. But, the student who claimed "There's nothing out there for a reference!" did quite well maintaining his location. So, we're about the 270 off LLO. "Uh oh, there's some bad weather down south! We can't go any further south. We have East or West but don't dare go any further South lest you end up in IMC."

He plotted his position quite quickly so, amazingly, he picked Llano for a diversion. Cooper's it was. I ate a chunk of tater salad a bit too fast and almost choked. Oops! Other than that, the prime rib was awesome!

We went on to T82 and did a crash and dash before heading on to Lockhart (50R) for another touch before heading home. Originally, we were gonna hang out and let him do some night landings but it had been a long day. He claims he's jinxed at Lockhart so of course, his landing was not quite up to par. After that he says, "You realize we're going to do that again, right?" I guess it was no going home until he had a landing I couldn't criticize. :) That one did turn out well so it was off to Austin.

He's actually a pretty good student so the last couple flights I've been playing the role of the "PITA" passenger who doesn't stop bugging the pilot. "We lost the engine? Uh oh. Wow, where we landing? But, that place over there looks good! Man, I really hope this comes out well. But, where are we landing?" Later, we talked about the "ISO" switch on the comm panel as well as calming your passengers or even excusing yourself from conversation from the DPE. :)

I was full when we left Llano but now I sure wish I had gotten some of that sauce. Some bread dipped in that sauce right now would make for an awesome snack! :D

I woke up at 6 AM to get to the airport for an animal rescue flight. Wheels up at about 7:45 AM or so, EST. Logged 3.0 in the Mooney this morning flying out to Youngstown, Ohio and back with two dogs. They were sweet and the trip went well.

I took off from KMYF at 2015 Zulu today January 1. I had a one and a half hour flight out in east San Diego County. Nice day, nice flight. I only bounced once when I returned to MYF. :)

...an excellent use for an airplane by any measure.

You're alright in my book, Ted, no matter what all those other mutts have to say!

I took my son up yesterday for 1.5 in the C205.

It was a (rare!) gorgeous day so far this winter in Western Pennsylvania.

It was refreshing to pay less than $5/gal for fuel, too!

I don't know who it was. I just know it wasn't me. My airplane is 300 miles away in the hangar in S49 and I am in the Portland area for the winter. So it was some lucky guy that has a plane close by in a hangar in a southern state probably. :frown3::frown2::P

I did not go flying, and will not today. The weather, and my sickness, all seem to be pointing to better days tomorrow and Sunday!

Sorry I coudn't meet up with you,.. sure was a great evening to be out. I commented to my wife how clear it was as we drove past Pennridge at 1pm. Maybe next time.... Thanks for the invite.

Our EAA Chapter (857 at KPJC - Zelienople, PA) had its 5th annual First to Fly on the First Fly In/Out. Of those 5 years, 3 were flyable including this one. I arrived at the airport at around 10am. I checked to make sure the oil pan heater was plugged in and working on the 152 I scheduled to fly. Then I went back to our EAA hangar to help get things ready.

We have a raffle where you get half of your ticket at the departure airport, then fly to two other airports to find your other half. I flew with a friend in the back (cold) of his Citabria to drop off one of the cans full of tickets at KBTP (Butler, PA).

I filled the 152 with a non-flying pilot and we flew from KPJC to KUCP (New Castle, PA) to KBTP then back to PJC. We keep the route short in case weather is flyable but iffy. It was a beautiful day and we took our time. 1.4 logged and 2.4 total in the air.

Happy New Year! :cheerswine:

It's a very rewarding reason to fly, I suggest it to anyone else who's interested.

You're alright in my book, Ted, no matter what all those other mutts have to say!

Thanks, Spike! Although all the mutts I've taken flying seem to like me. ;)

You need one of these Battery Minders, leave them on year round. Designed for AGM / Gel cells they de-sulfate the battery and they last years longer.

Not the first, but I got out today for a .6, 3 crash and dashes and a full stop just to update currency. Was too cold for anything else (-15*F) at wheels up time.

Yikes, now that's:

METAR ... RMK HLY CRP RLY FRKN CLD

WEll being sick has kept me grounded, now we are looking at 5 days of rain.

We have a fog advisory in place right now to boot! So no flying for me until next weekend it looks like. :(

Not the first in 09 but I did go up last night for currency. It's been awhile since I've been up at night and almost forgot how peaceful it is to be up with the sun down.

Actually, I do have a desulphator w/trickle charge - haven't hooked it up for a variety of reasons. The problem is that I've been so busy as to not take the plane up for about 2 months.... coupled with 30 degree temps (down in the teens a few days before).

The trip may have gone well, but the pilots lounge at the FBO will never be the same...

We have a winner!

If you wern't the first you were close enough.

Umm... I was in the air 2 hours prior absolute, one hour if you just look at the time for the respective time zone. I demand a recount! ;)

Sure it will. That room is actually what we end up using to hold the dogs and give them a bit of play time between flights. While they pretty much just curl up and go to sleep in the plane, they generally don't like turbulence any better than humans. The previous flight I got a pretty bumpy ride into Williamsport, and two out of the three dogs didn't react particularly well, so we needed some additional clean-up time.

There, fixed it for ya :D:rofl:.

Thanks... and you are exactally right... I showed up at the airport at exactally the wrong moment... walk in there's Ted, "hold this while I put away the mooney" hands me a leash and walkes out... 5 min later it's piddling on the carpet.

Hey, I didn't tell you to come by and drool on my airplane. ;)
